BRIEF: Lightning apologize for late-night promotional calls

TAMPA, Jul 08, 2009 (Tampa Tribune - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- To Tampa Bay Lightning fans who received a midnight phone call with center Steven Stamkos on the other end of the line, the team would like to apologize for the inconvenience.

According to Tampa Bay spokesman Bill Wickett, Stamkos cut the recording on Tuesday night to promote this week's team prospects camp featuring an open scrimmage and skills competition on Saturday. The telemarketing company used by the team mistakenly sent the message out shortly after it was recorded, sometime after 10:30 p.m., rather than on Wednesday morning, as intended.

Wickett said in an e-mail that the team wasn't sure how many fans received the call, but the calls were stopped as soon as the error was realized.

Only those fans on a list compiled by the Tampa Bay Lightning/St. Pete Times Forum received the calls.

The prospects camp, featuring this year's first-round picks Victor Hedman and Carter Ashton, opens Thursday with on-ice workouts beginning at 9 a.m. at the Forum and runs through July 15. All workouts are open to the public.
