BRIEF: Kim Jong-un death rumour spreads across SNS

SEOUL (THE KOREA HERALD/ANN) -- An unfounded rumor has spread across social networking websites on Friday that North Korea's new leader Kim Jong-un had been assassinated.
According to BBC, CNN and other media outlets, the rumour, which claimed Kim was killed by gunmen at the North Korean embassy, originated on Chinese microblogging site Sina Weibo then was picked up by Twitter users, though many remained skeptical.
CNN reported that US intelligence officials "have been looking into such rumours for more than a week", adding that they have found no evidence to confirm his death.
Later on Friday, Sina Weibo showed more than 380,000 posts referencing the story. It also made to Twitter's Trending Topics list.
Kim, believed to be in his late 20s, took over leadership of the reclusive state after his father Kim Jong-il died late last year.
Rumours of deaths of celebrities and world leaders commonly spread on social media sites including Twitter.
