BRIEF: iPhone unseats Razr as top U.S. cell phone
(Chicago Tribune Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Nov. 10--Apple's iPhone 3G became the top-selling mobile handset for U.S. adults in the third quarter, ending the Motorola Razr's long reign and signaling a shift in consumer tastes toward more feature-laden phones, according to new data from market research firm NPD Group.
Motorola's Razr V3 had sat at the top of NPD's ranking for the last 12 quarters, the Port Washington, N.Y.-based firm said Monday. The Razr remains one of Motorola's best-selling phones despite having debuted in 2004 -- remarkable longevity in the handset business, whose product cycle is increasingly fast-paced. In Motorola's third-quarter earnings call in October, co-chief executive Sanjay Jha said the company shipped more than 3 million Razrs in the period, compared with more than 1 million units of the updated Razr 2.
Of the five best-selling phones among adults in the U.S. as ranked by NPD, four of them are "optimized for messaging and other advanced Internet features," the research firm noted. After the Razr at No. 2, the remaining top sellers in order are Research In Motion's BlackBerry Curve, LG's Rumor and LG's enV2.
NPD's numbers do not include purchases by businesses.
