BRIEF: Grant money to pay for 2nd bomb robot
EL PASO, Nov 18, 2009 (El Paso Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
The Police Department will spend $224,000 of federal grant money to buy a new bomb robot that can be used to respond to potential terrorist threats.
This will be the city's second bomb robot, said Assistant Police Chief Eric Shelton. The police have an FBI-certified bomb squad, Shelton said, and it can be called to respond to national incidents.
Having a second robot gives the city added flexibility to respond to simultaneous bomb threats, Shelton said. It also ensures coverage if one robot has to be used outside the city, he said.
The Police Department also provides bomb-squad services to five other West Texas counties. No local match is needed.
The City Council approved the purchase 8-0 on Tuesday.
