BRIEF: Bobby Brown performs in DeSoto, says 'I love you, Whitney!'

Feb 12, 2012 (The Commercial Appeal - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Just hours after the death of singer Whitney Houston, her former husband, Bobby Brown, paid tribute to her from the stage at Landers Center in Southaven Saturday night.


"I love you, Whitney!" he shouted before the nearly sold-out crowd of about 7,600.

Brown, appearing in an R&B concert headlined by his longtime group New Edition, took the stage at 9:53 p.m. as the crowd chanted, "Bobby, Bobby, Bobby." He thanked the audience before telling them, "This was the hardest thing for me to come out on this stage. But you bought the tickets, and came to us after 29 years." The crowd raised their phones in the air and continued chanting his name as the R&B group performed.


Earlier, after word of Houston's death began circulating, the group's management had rescinded all media backstage passes and required members of the press to buy tickets if they wanted to see the concert.

Audience members expressed shock at news of Houston's death.

"This is so hard to believe that Whitney is gone. She was so beautiful and talented," said Emeka Buck of Memphis.

The "New Edition Reunion Tour" is scheduled to move on to Nashville today.
