BRIEF: Ancient fashion: Chinese haute couture defined through its dynasties

(Bakersfield Californian, The (KRT) Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) Mar. 2--The Bakersfield Chinese Women's Club recently staged two fashion shows that gave viewers a glimpse of clothing -- both elaborate and everyday garb -- worn by Chinese women through the centuries.

Most of the outfits were made by members Cathie Godges, Livia Kao and Maria Leung, with help from Pearl Tom. The women used no patterns to construct the beautiful outfits and relied on their memories and a children's coloring book purchased in San Francisco's Chinatown to guide them.

Other outfits came from members' closets or were purchased for the show. The club somehow managed to come in under its $500 budget.

The women hold an annual celebration for Chinese New Year, but club President Godges, who was born and raised in Hong Kong, wanted to do something special for this year's event. After getting approval from the other members, the project was launched and took about six months to complete.

Godges, Leung and the fashion show program provided all the information about the clothing and historical periods contained in the captions. A search of the Internet will show some disagreement about exact dates of the various dynastic periods. We're using the dates provided by the women's club.
