BRIEF: Alorton mayor resigns amid investigation [St. Louis Post-Dispatch]
(St. Louis Post-Dispatch (MO) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Feb. 14--ALORTON -- Alorton Mayor Randy McCallum resigned Monday night and was replaced by Trustee Trymella Johnson.
The changes came amid a federal investigation of what authorities have described as "systemic corruption." The probe has included FBI raids Jan. 5 on the village hall and McCallum's home.
McCallum has not been charged with any crime. He told a reporter on the day of the raids that he had "nothing to hide." He could not be reached for comment Tuesday.
He said in a letter to the village board that he was resigning because of family and other commitments. The board voted to appoint Johnson to the position.
Last month, Michael Baxton pleaded guilty of stealing four video game consoles while he was Alorton police chief and lying to investigators about it. He is awaiting sentencing. By the time of his plea, he had moved on to briefly become chief of the East St. Louis police force.
Also in January, Ronnie D. Cummings, Alorton's street superintendent, was charged with unlawful possession of firearms by a felon and and lying to investigators. He is free on bail pending trial.
