BRIEF: 911 SCAMS: Kennewick police warn about new scam in area
KENNEWICK, Apr 13, 2012 (Tri-City Herald - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
Kennewick police are warning about a scam that makes people think the call is from 911.
A Kennewick woman said she got numerous hang-up calls Thursday morning and when her husband checked the caller ID, it said the calls were from "Emergency911calling," said Mike Blatman, Kennewick police crime prevention specialist.
The caller had a distinctive accent and claimed he was with Kennewick police.
The caller then demanded information about a man and said if she didn't provide it, the man would be arrested on a federal warrant, Blatman said.
The woman was then told to call 910-685-7393, which is a number associated with numerous fraud scams around the country, he said.
Kennewick police urge people to remember they should never give out personal or financial information over the phone unless they originated the call.
They also should be careful if they get calls from unknown people who demand person information or make other demands.
