BRIEF: 2 replaced on judicial nominating committee

Feb 14, 2012 (The Salina Journal - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Saline County commissioners on Tuesday voted 2-0, with Commissioner John Reynolds abstaining, to appoint two new members to the 28th Judicial Nominating Committee.

The commission appointed David Smith and former Sheriff Darrell Wilson to the board.

Reynolds had wanted to reappoint current members Phyllis Anderson and Betsy Wearing, but faced opposition from Commissioner Randy Duncan during a study session and the commission meeting.

"The two current members are doing an excellent job," Reynolds said.

The board is made up four attorneys and four citizens from Saline and Ottawa counties and Kansas Supreme Court Chief Justice Lawton Nuss and nominates candidates when a district court judge leaves the court.

Duncan said he wanted to give new people an opportunity to serve on the board since Wearing and Anderson had already served.

"They both served well and did a fine job (on the committee)," Duncan said "I have nothing against these people, but they have already filled a judicial position. This is an opportunity to allow new citizens to serve in this capacity." For more on this story, see Wednesday's Salina Journal.
