Branding Wichita? Group wants your ideas [The Wichita Eagle :: ]

(Wichita Eagle (KS) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Sept. 01--New York City is known as the Big Apple. Kansas City is called the City of Fountains.

And Wichita? A group of community organizations wants to identify a brand title for Wichita to "shape how the rest of the world" will know the city. That group is seeking Wichitans' input.

The public is invited to attend a brand workshop from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at the Scottish Rite Center, 332 E. First Street in downtown.

"We really need community feedback," said James Williams, spokesman for Go Wichita Convention and Visitors Bureau, one of the six organizations initiating the branding. "It's important to hear what people think makes Wichita special and unique, so we can move forward to sell Wichita." At the end of the process, he added, "We hope to identify Wichita's unique promise as a community." That promise would be for variety of areas, ranging from leisure and tourism to economic development, he said.

Wichita has long been known as the Air Capital of the World. This branding process doesn't necessarily exclude that tag, Williams said.

"We want to go into this with a blank slate," he added, "and see what people tell us." The selection process will last through the end of the year. Once a brand is picked, Go Wichita will use it in future marketing campaigns, Williams said.

Partnering with Go Wichita in the project are the Wichita Metro Chamber of Commerce, Greater Wichita Economic Development Coalition, Wichita Downtown Development Corporation, Wichita Community Foundation and Wichita State University.

The public will have an opportunity to provide input beyond this week's meetings by filling out a survey, which will be available later this week on Go Wichita's website, www.gowichita.com, Williams said.

The group has hired Believable Brands, a consulting firm, to help "us walk through this," he said.
