Boutique outfits mature women's mirth: New store caters to members of Red Hat Society
(Lima News, The (Ohio) (KRT) Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) Jan. 28--LIMA -- When Deb Larimore joined the Red Hat Tootsies, the Lima chapter of the Red Hat Society, in January 2004, she soon found herself at the ground floor of a niche business serving members of the society.
The business grew out of the Internet and into a storefront, Happy Hatters Boutique, 1300 West Breese Road.
The store has been open since December, but held its grand opening Friday.
The chore of finding a red hat, purple clothes and other appropriate regalia turned out to be more difficult than she anticipated.
"I had to drive 35 miles just to find a decent selection of Red Hat merchandise," Larimore said.
Larimore's store is now the place where Red Hatters drive to find clothing, she said, citing recent visitors from Indiana and Cleveland.
"We started out as a home-based business selling Red Hat products from our Web site, www.happyhattersboutique.com." Larimore said.
Last year, the Internet business produced a 58-page catalog for distribution to those who did not feel comfortable ordering online.
Happy Hatters Boutique advertised in the group's lifestyle magazine when it started.
"It goes out to well over half a million women," Larimore said. "The requests for the catalog come from all over the country."
Larimore said she felt a need to open a local store.
"Everybody carries a little Red Hat. Macy's carries some, Hobby Lobby carries some, but no one has exclusively a Red Hat shop," Larimore said.
Larimore's son, Brenton Basinger, is the business manager. They have two other part-time employees.
There is a party room attached to the store. Larimore said some Red Hat groups from elsewhere in the state have reserved the space for lunches and shopping.
The building is also home to the shipping department, who is Basinger, from the catalog and Internet shop.
Larimore said the boutique has several vendors for the clothing.
"We search and try to find things that are unique because a lot of the girls in the Red Hat Society have it all. They all have their boas and things, so we try to find the little things that they can't find every place else," Larimore said.
