Boulder police: Man demanded money for lost phone

Feb 13, 2012 (Daily Camera - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Boulder police arrested a man Sunday after he found a woman's phone and allegedly told her he would only give it back if she paid him $150.

Stephan Mitchell, 53, was arrested on suspicion of theft under $500 and criminal attempt to commit a misdeanor after police officers went to a meeting the suspect believed he had arranged with the phone's owner.

According to a police report, a woman lost her phone Wednesday somewhere in the 1100 block of 12th Street. Two days later, she got a new phone and shut off service to her old phone, a black Droid X2 worth about $300.

Then, on Saturday, the woman's mother got a call from a man who said he had the phone and wanted $100 for it. She told police the man said he went through a lot of trouble to dry out the phone and bought a charger for it, according to the police report. He got upset when the woman seemed reluctant to pay him for the phone and told her it was "not negotiable." A police officer called Mitchell and pretended to be the phone's owner. According to the police report, Mitchell demanded $200 and eventually agreed to accept $150. A meeting was set for the Conoco gas station at 3375 28th St.

Mitchell allegedly told the officer he was bringing a gun to the meeting and "wasn't going to back down from a fight if that's what it came down to," the police report said.

Mitchell was arrested without incident around 7 p.m. Monday. A woman who accompanied Mitchell to the meeting turned over the Droid phone, a charger and a receipt for the charger to police. She told police he was just trying to do a "good deed," the police report said.

According to the police report, Mitchell said, "Jesus Christ! I didn't do anything wrong," when he was taken into custody, but he otherwise declined to speak to officers.

Mitchell remained in custody Monday afternoon on a $50 bond.
