Boingo inks Japanese airport expansion pact with NTT Broadband

Feb 22, 2013 (AIRLINE INDUSTRY INFORMATION via COMTEX) -- Los Angeles-based Wi-Fi software and services provider Boingo Wireless (NASDAQ: WIFI) said it has inked an agreement with NTT Broadband Platform Inc to manage and operate Wi-Fi services at five major airports in Japan.

NTT Broadband Platform builds and operates shared WLAN access points to railroad companies, airports, convenience stores, cafe chains, local governments, among other places..

The airports include Tokyo's Haneda and Narita airports, Sapporo's New Chitose Airport, Fukuoka Airport and Nagoya's Chubu Airport. These airports collectively serve more than 130m passengers annually.

Boingo said it will be the only international Wi-Fi provider for the five airports when services launch in spring 2013.

With the addition of the five airports in Japan, Boingo said it will manage Wi-Fi services at 30% of the top ten most highly trafficked airports in the Asia Pacific region, which serve a collective total of more than 250m passengers each year.

Boingo will broadcast its "Boingo Hotspot" SSID throughout the airports and will fully manage the customer experience to ensure efficient, quality connections. Boingo's Wi-Fi services will include authentication, roaming access, 24-hour customer support, and sponsorship opportunities.

The firm's services at all five airports will also be available to all of Boingo's roaming and platform service partners. Boingo roaming partners, which wholesale Wi-Fi access and provide self-branded Wi-Fi to their customers as part of their existing services, include Korea Telecom, LGU +, Skype, Orange France and Verizon (NYSE; VZ).

Travelers will be able to choose from a variety of Boingo access plans at the airports, including Boingo Asia Pacific, offering affordable access to more than 200,000 hotspots throughout the region, as well as hourly and day passes.

International travelers can gain access to Boingo's more than 600,000 hotspots worldwide on up to four devices via the Boingo Global flat rate plan, or on up to two mobile devices through the Boingo Mobile plan.
