Body shops name best, worst insurers
(Arizona Daily Star, The (Tucson) (KRT) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Jun. 26--Some auto insurance companies are better than others when it comes to customer service after you've made a claim.
One way to sort out who's best is to ask the experts: collision-repair shops.
The Automotive Service Association of Arizona's annual survey of body shops says USAA is best and Progressive is worst.
The Top 10 among 40 rated insurers were honored Wednesday at the group's 11th annual "Best Insurers Awards" banquet in Phoenix.
USAA, or United Services Automobile Association, has about 2.4 percent of the market share in private-passenger auto liability, according to the Arizona Department of Insurance.
State Farm, ranked second in the survey, has about 13.1 percent of the market share. Progressive Advanced has about 4.5 percent.
In the survey, USAA ranked at the top in overall policies, attitudes, payment processes and the quality and timeliness of repairs provided.
"The purpose of us putting this survey together is to show the significant variances as to how policyholders are treated after a loss," said Luz Rubio, executive director of the nonprofit Association.
Scores range from 3.3 to 7.9 on a 10-point scale.
People often choose an insurer through a referral from a friend or an advertisement or by comparing rates, but none of those tells you how you'll be treated, she said.
It bears noting that the auto-insurance industry and collision-repair shops have been at odds at times on such issues as preferred-provider arrangements and the use of original manufacturer parts.
