BLOG: Four DVRs, no waiting: Greetings from SEC country [Houston Chronicle]
(Houston Chronicle (TX) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Nov. 6--Greetings from Birmingham, Ala. I'm making my annual excursion into SEC territory for the Saturday afternoon game between LSU and Alabama at Tuscaloosa. I'm thinking that I owe it to you guys while I'm here to make a stop at Dreamland Barbecue [http://www.dreamlandbbq.com/], too. I will do my best to do my duty in that regard.
At any rate, I whiffed on a few fine points in Friday's TV notebook because of the travel day. To wit:
Kevin Harlan and Solomon Wilcots have Texans-Colts on Sunday on CBS. Even though ratings are likely to be skimpy, Fox has opted to send Saints-Rams to Channel 26 opposite the Texans game on Channel 11. On the college front, Tom Hart and Aaron Taylor will call the Houston-Tulsa game on CBS College Sports.
ESPN's Outside the Lines on Sunday will continue with the recent Veterans Day theme, originating from the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. Monday Night Countdown, meanwhile, includes a feature with Vietnam veteran Rocky Bleier, the former Steelers running back, and a live interview with Marie Tillman, the widow of former NFL player Pat Tillman, who was killed on duty in Afghanistan.
KGOW (1560 AM) will announce the four finalists for the Lombardi Award at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday with former Packers guard Jerry Kramer and the ubiquitous Jim McIngvale from Gallery Furniture at ... do I even need to give you the address?
The Winter Olympics are less than a hundred days away, and it's time to focus on figs. NBC Sports and Universal Sports will have 10 hours this weekend from the ISU Grand Prix event in Nagano, Japan. Universal Sports coverage begins at 4 p.m. Friday and NBC coverage at 1 p.m. Sunday. Among the contestants is Becky Bereswill of Houston, the 2008 junior Grand Prix Final champion.
The Texas Radio Hall of Fame [http://www.texasradiohalloffame.com/] inducts a new class of honorees on Sunday at Tin Hall in Cypress. Active honorees include Lana Hughes and JP Pritchard of KTRH (740 AM).
I mentioned the Favre Bowl almost outrating Texans-Bills last week in Houston, but I didn't note that the national broadcast recorded a 17.4 Nielsen rating and 29.8 million viewers, trailing only a 1995 49ers-Cowboys game as the most-watched Sunday NFL game in Fox Sports history.
Another overlooked radio update: Matt Sampsell, the former Channel 26 sports anchor, takes a crack at radio on Nov. 9 and 10 as Ted DeLuca's co-host on KBME (790 AM).
Finally, on the non-sports front, KUHT (Channel 8) at 9 p.m. Monday, Nov. 16, presents Galveston: Gateway on the Gulf, a documentary from Richard Coberly and Veronica Veerkamp of Windward Media on the city's role as the Elllis Island of Texas from 1835 through 1935. More than 200,000 immigrants entered the U.S. through Galveston during that time.
