Blackout affects most of Chile
Santiago, Mar 15, 2010 (EFE via COMTEX) --
An outage in a 500 KW transformer in the
Central Interconnected System knocked out power to most of Chile,
Interior Minister Rodrigo Hinzpeter said.
The blackout started at 8:40 p.m. on Sunday and affected an area
stretching from Taltal, a city in northern Chile, to Chiloe Island,
some 2,500 kilometers (1,553 miles) away in the southern part of the
country.
"This is a power outage, it has nothing to do with an earthquake
or any other emergency situation," Hinzpeter said.
Chile was hit by a magnitude-8.8 earthquake on Feb. 27 that
caused at least $30 billion in losses.
The South American country has been hit by a series of powerful
aftershocks since last month's quake, which left some 500 people
dead and 2 million others injured or displaced.
An outage at one of the two transformers at the Cahrrua
substation in Temuco, a city located 675 kilometers (nearly 420
miles) south of Santiago, caused the blackout, a spokesman for the
Central Interconnected System told Radio Cooperativa.
The substation, which supplies electricity to the Metropolitan
Region, has only two transformers, and the second one shut down to
avoid overloading the system, the utility spokesman said.
The shutdown of the substation took down the rest of the system.
Utility officials "suspect" that last month's earthquake may have
caused damage to the grid that led to the blackout, the Central
Interconnected System spokesman said. EFE
