Bielefeld municipal hospitals to test beds with RFID solution

(DMEurope Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)DMEUROPE-25 May 2006-Bielefeld municipal hospitals to test beds with RFID solution (C)2006 DMeurope.com (http://www.dmeurope.com) & DME Ltd. All rights reserved.

The municipal hospitals in Bielefeld are to test beds with integrated RFID chips in order to improve the deployment and cleaning of their hospital beds.

The pilot project, the first of its kind in Germany, is run by German IT services company Siemens Business Services and hospital bed manufacturer Joh. Stiegelmeyer.

Previously, every bed underwent the same thorough cleaning procedure in the hospitals central preparation units - regardless of whether the patient had used it for a few hours or several days and had a sprained ankle or a highly infectious disease.

Similarly, the hospitals had no way of knowing how much time beds spent in the preparation unit until they found their way back to the wards.

With the b.loc bed management software and integrated RFID transponders, all hospital beds can now be clearly identified and tracked.

Siemens Business Services and Stiegelmeyer affixed two re-writable UHF RFID transponders to each bed in a selected ward of the Bielefeld hospital. A number was assigned to each bed and stored on the chips. The chips broadcast their data to RFID readers installed at the ward s entry and exit doors and in the central bed preparation unit. From there, the data is forwarded to the b.loc software and stored.

When a bed passes the reader in the bed preparation unit, the system calculates how much time has passed since it was last cleaned and automatically issues appropriate work instructions.
