Beaverton School Board meets Tuesday to approve $3.6 million in contruction contracts and review budget feedback from citizens

Apr 02, 2012 (The Oregonian - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The Beaverton School Board is expected to approve $3.6 million in construction costs during its meeting on Tuesday for new bleachers, artificial turf and telecom rooms at schools across the district.

The funding would come from the voter-approved 2006 construction bond, from savings on projects that came in under budget, said Dick Steinbrugge, Beaverton School District executive administrator for facilities.

Such funds are limited to construction and other capital improvements and cannot be used for school district operations. The bleachers at Aloha, Beaverton and Sunset high schools need to be replaced for safety reasons, Steinbrugge said in an email. The costs are projected not to exceed $1.8 million.

"It's a safety project needed due to corrosion of the existing structural frames which support the seating," Steinbrugge wrote.

The $1 million telecom project requires remodeling at 29 schools to allow for future installation of equipment necessary for a wireless network for students and staff.

Westview and Southridge high schools will get new artificial turf to replace existing turf that is prematurely aging.

The district has worked with FieldTurf to patch bald spots and holes in the 6-year-old turf because of the potential hazard for players but ultimately chose to replace the fields at a reduced price.

Originally, board members approved costs not to exceed $700,000, but they're expected to amend the amount upward to $850,000 to pay for extra padding under the turf.

"We understand that these pads are not a requirement but are being used more often nowadays as concern about concussions is growing," Steinbrugge said in an email.

The board meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. in the district administrative center, 16550 S.W. Merlo Road. The contracts are under the consent agenda, which includes housekeeping items that are typically not discussed individually.

The board will receive an update on the budget around 8:30 p.m., which is expected to include results of the 100 Community Budget Teaching Sessions held across the district in March. District staff looked at trends among the responses to $40 million in budget cuts as well as additional suggestions people wrote on the sheets.

The meeting is projected to end at 9:20 p.m.
