Beaverton man gets 10 years for burglaries, including one of honeymooning couple

Sep 02, 2010 (The Oregonian - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The case: Washington County Sheriff's deputies arrested a man in March, accusing him of a string of burglaries, including the home of a honeymoon couple in September.

Jamie Ray Pierce, 34, of Beaverton, was accused of stealing $19,000 from the residence of a Garden Home couple who was out of town for their wedding and honeymoon, deputies said. The honeymooners, who returned to find their home ransacked, reported missing gift cards, wedding gifts, a shower head, jewelry and other items.

County prosecutor Jason Ring said the victims called stores where they had gift cards and one store was able to pull up information showing Pierce had called the company to find out the gift card's balance. The call captured Pierce's phone number, linking deputies to Pierce's residence, where they served a search warrant.

When deputies searched Pierce's home, they found ample evidence of the honeymoon burglary as well as evidence from other burglaries reported in Tigard, Hillsboro and Aloha, authorities said.

Update: Pierce went to trial in August on five counts of first-degree burglary, three counts of first-degree aggravated theft and one count of first-degree theft.

Ring said Pierce opted for a stipulated facts trial rather than a trial by jury, which means the state and defense agreed to the facts of the case and let a judge determine Pierce's guilt.

Judge Gayle Nachtigal found Pierce guilty of the five counts of burglary. The state dismissed the remaining counts, Ring said, because they were lesser charges that wouldn't add time to Ring's sentence.

Sentence: Ring said Pierce was sentenced to 10 years in prison and three years of post-prison supervision. He was also ordered to pay about $58,000 in restitution to the victims in the case.
