Bahrain's TRA reports strong growth in mobile broadband users [TeleGeography CommsUpdate]

(TeleGeography CommsUpdate Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) According to figures published by the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) as reported by Gulf Daily News, mobile broadband users accounted for nearly nine out of ten internet subscriptions in Bahrain at the end of 2013. Of the total 1.63 million broadband subscriptions recorded in the country at that date, 89% were accessing the internet via pay-per-use, standalone or add-on mobile broadband packages, it said, while only 11% (179,300) were connected to a fixed broadband line. In its annual report, the regulator also pointed out that the overall number of internet subscriptions in Bahrain increased by more than 30% between 2012 and 2013. However, the spike in connections has not been reflected in sector revenues, which only increased by 3.4% over the same period to BHD423 million (USD1.13 billion) in 2013, compared to BHD409 million in 2012. *The report went on to say: 'In respect of the latest technologies and services, Bahrain is at the forefront of what current mobile technologies provide, including 2G, 3G, 3.5G and 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE), while mobile operators are continuously amending and upgrading the services offered to end users.'
