Axentra and USI Offer OEMs and Service Providers First Digital Media White Box Solution for Smart Appliances

SAN FRANCISCO, iHollywood Digital Living Room, Dec. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Universal Scientific Industrial Co. Ltd (USI) and Axentra today announced a partnership to deliver an integrated digital media solution to OEMs and Service Providers (SP). As a complete hardware and software solution for smart appliances, HipServ allows OEMs and SPs to quickly go to market with a competitive solution for the home digital content market that enables consumers to save, show, sync and share their digital media anytime, anywhere, in the home and beyond.

According to analyst firm The Diffusion Group, demand for digital home media solutions had reached critical mass in 2004, exceeding 16 percent penetration among US households. The firm predicts growth to 50 million by 2010, comprising of 45 percent of all US households. The growth follows trends in consumer broadband adoption, growth of home networks and adoption of multiple mobile and digital devices, including multimedia cell phones, digital cameras and MP3 players that have seen rapid growth.

With HipServ, now there is a common home, a simple place for the consumer to save photos, music, video and documents. Content is always available to Windows and Macintosh PCs, enabling the consumer to use their favorite PC applications. Media can be served directly for show on a variety of consumer electronics digital media players (DMP) and IP enabled TVs. This same media can sync to various mobile handheld devices (MHD) from MP3 music players, mobile phones, PDAs, and digital cameras. HipServ allows customers to simultaneously share select content with friends and family over any broadband Internet connection as well as providing remote access and upload capability to their media server at home while on the road or at the local internet cafe.

USI's comprehensive ODM hardware portfolio of storage products includes an extensible version of the HipServ software platform optimized for the latest Freescale and Marvel powered chipsets. These certified hardware platforms are specifically designed to be readily customized, rapidly deployed and scalable at minimal cost.

"Mass market consumers have expressed the desire to have additional storage for their digital media that is separate from their home PCs," says Dale Gilliam, Director of Primary Research at The Diffusion Group. "Consumers who would like to share their digital photos and videos with friends and family require secure storage and backup of their personal media. They want access to their content through their TVs and stereos rather than solely on the PC, justifying the emergence of digital media storage appliances. The combined solution from USI and Axentra helps consumers realize a simpler vision of a complex reality."

These smart appliances effectively manage home-based content and other devices through one simple user interface that is consistent when operating at home or remotely. Other features include continuous back-up from computers to the appliance. UPnP auto detection in HipServ allows easy connection of peripherals such as Internet cameras to Digital Media Players (DMP) and HipServ's sharing function with Remote Access features allow users to access media and monitor the front door while out on the road. HipServ's Remote Desktop enables a standard Web browser to securely operate the PC remotely to run a Quicken or video application that may be installed only on the PC at home.

"The combined USI and Axentra solution allows OEMs to quickly go to market with a competitive solution for the home digital content market," said Frank Wu, Vice President and General Manager of Storage, Server and Digital Home Group, USI. "Axentra's HipServ software platform is an innovative and powerful environment that provides users with a new centralized approach to managing and sharing all personal content from anywhere."

"HipServ is the first software platform that will unify the content needs of users at home in a simple and easy experience," said Marc Benglia, Chief Executive Officer, Axentra. "Whether at home or away, a user can always access content and share it securely. USI's family of versatile hardware products is the ideal platform to deploy HipServ, as it provides the performance and scalability needed by OEMs and service providers."

Benefits for OEMs & Service Providers
Service providers and OEMs that have a comprehensive digital lifestyle strategy can integrate HipServ into their existing portals and deploy consumer valued next-generation services that can be customized and extended to link with infrastructure offerings such as offsite backup, to managed services, webcast and pay-per-view service subscriptions, as well as goods and service offerings that increase ARPU. A modular tiered product structure offers affordable cost targets for entry to professional grade packages.
