Authorities warn of online lending scam

(Omaha World-Herald (NE) (KRT) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Aug. 30--Nebraska authorities are warning of an apparent online lending fraud involving USA Financial Center, which lists its address as 1033 O St. in Lincoln.

The State Department of Banking and Finance said USA Financial is not licensed and does not have an office at that location.

An Arizona resident complained that the company had advertised loans requiring a $682 advance fee.

The person wired the fee to a Canadian address but has not received the loan or a refund, the department said. The company's Web site also has shut down.

The department said people who have done business with USA Financial can contact the department at 877-471-3445 or other authorities.

The department warned consumers to be sure whom they are doing business with, because fraudulent companies often adopt names of familiar businesses but bypass state laws that protect against fraud.

Tips from the department:

--Don't pay for the promise of a loan. It is illegal in Nebraska.

--Legitimate lenders don't guarantee a loan before you apply and they have checked your credit.

--Do not give credit card, bank or Social Security numbers over the phone to someone you don't know.

--Do not send money by wire to obtain a loan.
