AUSSIE APPROACH FOR WHITE FERNS FOR INDIA SERIES

(New Zealand Press Association Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)Wellington, March 3 NZPA - The White Ferns begin a new era under a world-beating Australian coach when their five-match one-day international cricket series against India starts in Christchurch tomorrow.

The New Zealand women's team will be guided for the first time by last year's World Cup-winner Steve Jenkin as they face an India side coming off a 0-3 series loss to Australia.

Captain Haidee Tiffen, who replaces the retired Maia Lewis in charge, said Jenkin had already made a big impact.

``He played against us for years. He's really positive, he brings some of that Australian confidence, and it's soaking into the players. It's an exciting time,'' she said.

``It's great to have some fresh ideas and a new approach. All the girls are really positive.''

The team have trained for the past week at New Zealand Cricket's high performance centre at Lincoln, including two comfortable victories against New Zealand A.

Tiffen said the increased competition in this year's State League, won in an upset by Central Districts, would also help the White Ferns at international level.

``We want competition in New Zealand,'' she said.

``We want players to be under pressure all the time. It's really good for New Zealand women's cricket that there's no one team that is easy beat.''

India arrived in New Zealand this week after their tough time in Australia.

They scraped home by three runs against New Zealand A at Lincoln yesterday in their only dress rehearsal.

India scored 152 for nine in their 50 overs, with Mithali Raj topscoring with 37, before New Zealand A were dismissed for 149.

The best of the Indian bowlers was Neetu David with figures of three for 22.

White Ferns: Haidee Tiffen (captain), Suzie Bates, Nicola Browne, Sarah Burke, Anna Dodd, Emily Drumm, Maria Fahey, Sara McGlashan, Aimee Mason, Louise Milliken, Rebecca Rolls, Sarah Tsukigawa, Helen Watson.
