AT&T and Mayor's Commission on Aging Host 'Cell Phones for Seniors' Event in Philadelphia September 9th

PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 5 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- AT&T Inc. and the Philadelphia Mayor's Commission on Aging announced today the launch of a new public service initiative designed to benefit Philadelphia's mature adult population. AT&T will host a free event -- Cell Phones for Seniors -- on Tuesday, September 9th from 10 a.m. - noon at the Philadelphia Senior Center - Tioga Chapter, 1531 West Tioga Street.

"We are glad the Philadelphia Senior Center and AT&T are offering this vital learning experience for older adults," said Celeste Zappala, executive director of the Mayor's Commission on Aging. "We encourage seniors to take advantage of the opportunity to become fully familiar with their cell phones and to learn more about available technologies. Once a person learns how to master their cell phone, they can begin to teach others too."

"AT&T is very pleased to be part of this initiative and educational public service for mature adults. We have found senior citizens are using technology including wireless to find new ways to stay connected to family and friends. More are sending text messages and are eager to learn about GPS services and how to access the Internet from their cell phone," said Dan Lafond, vice president and general manager for AT&T's wireless division in Philadelphia.

The event is open to the center's members. Participants are encouraged to bring their wireless phone regardless of which wireless carrier they currently use.

AT&T also will also have free "practice" phones on-site. The session will cover everything from mobile phone basics, such as controlling the volume on your phone, to checking voice mail to storing a number in the phone's address book. Seniors can also learn about AT&T's Hearing Aid Compatible (HAC) options as well as how to send text messages and share pictures on their phones. AT&T volunteers will provide hands-on demonstrations and one-on-one instructional support.

AT&T has plans to expand the Cell Phones for Seniors program to other areas of Pennsylvania in the coming months.
