ATR to sponsor PET CONTEST

Nov 30, 2008 (Americus Times Recorder - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
-- On Dec. 25, nationwide, John Grogan's book, "Marley and Me, Life and Love With The World's Worst Dog," will open in theaters. The story follows Grogan and his wife Jenny as they move to Florida, buy a house, adopt a Labrador puppy they name Marley, and have kids.

Marley becomes an integral part of the family. According to an interview, Grogan said he realized Marley's escapades might make for fun reading, "Pretty early on, actually. Within weeks we were recounting his antics at dinner parties, and I began trotting him out in my newspaper columns shortly thereafter."

Grogan stated, "I think it had something to do with his guileless heart and over the top zest for life. Just as he was incapable of putting the brakes on his behavior, he had no bounds on his affection and loyalty, either. Not necessarily a bad thing. ... Quickly I realized I couldn't tell Marley's story without telling the story of my wife and me and our intrepid journey into parenthood. Eventually I realized my book was not so much a 'dog book' as the story of a family in the making and the bigger-than-life animal that helped shape it."

With that in mind, the Americus Times-Recorder wants to know about your pet, and how your pet has touched your life.

Email a picture and a story (no more than 250 words) of how your pet (dog, cat, etc.) has made a difference in your life or your family's life. Deadline is 4 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 11, and you will be eligible to win prizes, like tickets to the movie's opening day, dog toys and more. Your story will be published in the Dec. 21 edition of the newspaper.

Only emailed entries will be accepted. Pictures must be of you and your pet, and in a separate jpeg attachment. The entry submission needs to be in the body of an email. Emailed entries need to be sent to atr.editorial@gaflnews.com.

Deadline is 4 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 11.
