Assembly: Chairmen of 12 standing committees in PA of PML-N quota still

LAHORE, Jul 02, 2009 (Asia Pulse Data Source via COMTEX) -- Some 12 standing committees of Punjab Assembly (PA) are not functioning due to delay in the elections of their chairmen. According to assembly sources, the present government had decided to constitute 46 standing committees for the provincial assembly, allocating PPP and PML-N chairmen quota to run the constitutional affairs.

The PPP nominated its chairmen from their quota and elections of the committees were completed but Pakistan Muslim League-N leadership did not yet decide its heads of the committees. Due to delay in nomination of chairmen of the committees by the PML-N, some 12 standing committees did not convene even a single meeting.

Assembly sources said that the committees, which were not functioning included Communication and Works, Excise and Taxation, Food, Housing and Urban Development, Information, Irrigation and Power, Local Government, Religious Affairs and Auqaf, Special Education, Tourism and Resort, Privileges and PAC 1. Due to delay in nomination of the chairmen of these committees, all the assembly business was pending for more than one year, sources concluded.
