Ask4UFE launches new and improved website for women with uterine fibroids

SALT LAKE CITY, May 31, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Ask4UFE.com, a website created to educate women about fibroid treatment options including uterine fibroid embolization (UFE), recently relaunched making it easier for patients to find a physician in their area.

"One year ago, the website had fewer than 25,000 visitors per month and it has now grown to more than 80,000," said Fred P. Lampropoulos, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Merit Medical. "With the increase in traffic we want an updated website that is more user-friendly, allows for patients to view the site on their phones, provides information about health-related seminars and events, and gives viewers an option to sign up for our quarterly newsletter. Most important, the website needed to engage our viewers and make it easier for them to find an interventional radiologist for UFE consulting."

With the website's updated physician locator feature, patients enter their zip code to find the nearest interventional radiologist. They can also call 877-Ask4UFE daily from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. ET to find a nearby physician and schedule a consultation.

"The information and access to this procedure is important to me because many women don't understand they have options available," said Lampropoulos. "I had a close friend dealing with severe symptomatic fibroids and she felt the only treatment option availabe was a hysterectomy. In fact, a third of all hysterectomies are performed for benign conditions such as fibroids. Luckily she heard about uterine fibroid embolization, which is less-invasive, and has since had the procedure. Her life and health has changed since having UFE. This personal experience alone reinforces the importance of what the Ask4UFE program is about."

Uterine fibroid embolization has a faster recovery time than surgical treatments such as hysterectomy and myomectomy and is often performed as an outpatient procedure. It begins with a small nick made in the wrist or upper thigh through which a doctor passes a catheter, guiding it near the fibroids. Once the catheter is near the fibroids, embolic materials (tiny spheres the size of grains of sand) are released, which block the fibroids' blood flow. This deprives the fibroid from oxygen, which then shrinks the fibroids and alleviates symptoms.  Embosphere® Microspheres are the most trusted and widely used spherical embolic for uterine fibroid embolization, backed by more than 350,000 procedures worldwide, more than 15 years of clinical experience, and studied in more than 200 peer-reviewed clinical articles.  Embosphere® Microspheres are manufactured by Merit Medical Systems, Inc. (MMSI).
