Arcos Dorados to Participate in World Wildlife Fund's Earth Hour for 9th Consecutive Year


Arcos Dorados Holdings, Inc. (NYSE:ARCO) ("Arcos Dorados" or the "Company"), Latin America's largest restaurant chain and the world's largest McDonald's franchisee, announced that on March 25th all its restaurants in Latin America will shut down external lighting to add support to the Earth Hour initiative. This is the ninth time that the Company has supported this event promoted by the World Wildlife Fund.

Every year, millions of people around the world turn off their lights to raise awareness on the importance of the moderate use of natural resources in combating climate change.

"For Arcos Dorados, joining Earth Hour is very important, as this global initiative reflects the Company's philosophy. Every day, we seek to leave a smaller footprint on our planet by managing waste from our restaurants in a responsible manner and implementing actions to reduce water and electricity consumption, along with the use of local ingredients, and designing a more efficient supply chain," said Lyana Latorre, Arcos Dorados' Senior Director of Corporate Social Engagement.

Arcos Dorados' commitment to the Earth is reflected across its business through initiatives including:

  • The re-use of condensed water generated by restaurant air conditioners for the irrigation of gardens, washing of exteriors and other areas. The use of recycled water enables a considerable reduction in drinking water and energy consumption.
  • Installation of LOV fryers in restaurants - technology that requires less energy for heating and enables the Company to use up to 40% less oil.
  • Eco-friendly restaurants in Argentina, Brazil, Mexico and Puerto Rico: These are built or redesigned to meet the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification, where rainwater collectors are used to clean parking lots and discharge toilets. They have wind energy installers for electricity generation, and low emitting diode (LED) lighting that uses less energy.
  • Other measures taken by the Company to protect the planet include:



- The use of: 100% sustainable coffee certified by Rainforest Alliance across our different markets starting with Brazil, and sustainable fish certified by the Marine Stewardship Council.

- Partnership with the Global Roundtable of Sustainable Beef to develop a standard for serving sustainable meat, starting with Brazil in 2016.
