APX Labs and Octasic Demonstrate Extended Range Video Streaming Over 3G Cellular at Mobile World Congress 2013

(ENP Newswire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) ENP Newswire - 14 March 2013 Release date- 11032013 - BARCELONA, Spain - APX Labs and Octasic held a demonstration of ElementalCORE distributed 3G/4G core network product with Octasic's OCT2224W SoC at Mobile World Congress 2013, the premier event for the mobile industry.

The APX and Octasic solution was streaming high-quality video content over a simulated 20 km link, demonstrating that small cell technologies should be leveraged for much more than commercial carrier offload. The HSPA NodeB is based on the SDR2000, an integrated 2.5'x 5' platform developed with partner Deltenna. Small cells powered by ElementalCORE and OCT2224W provide dependable, long-range communications to demanding users. Please visit http://vimeo.com/60692106 for a video overview of the demonstration.

'Our ability to support a wide cell range of 20 km allows Octasic to serve markets where Small Cells are required to cover remote and sparsely populated areas,' said Emmanuel Gresset , Octasic VP Software Defined Radio. 'The low power smartphone-sized SDR2000 2G/3G/4G base station makes it easy to design battery powered transportable NodeB and tiny Metro Cells.' The 2013 Mobile World Congress welcomed more than 72,000 visitors from over 200 countries, setting another record for the mobile industry's most important annual event. This venue provided a prime location to demonstrate the power of Octasic's extended range technology, which provides additional capability on top of the already robust core networking software of ElementalCORE.

'Traditional cellular core networks are comprised of heavy-weight server software that is designed to run on powerful servers in controlled climate data centers,' explained Jeff Jenkins , Chief Operating Officer at APX Labs. 'When we tried to integrate other core network software with our base stations we found that they either didn't work, or wasted valuable computing power trying to provide enterprise-class core network capacity to a single base station that was serving far fewer users. So we set out to develop a collapsed core that was light-weight, as efficient as possible, and cost-effective for the Small Cell market. The result was ElementalCORE and we couldn't be more excited about the applications its mesh architecture enables, especially those that apply to harsh environments and disaster recovery.' ElementalCORE software was architected to provide a more reliable and efficient approach to cellular by distributing switching and routing functions and placing them with the cellular core at the edge of the network. ElementalCORE software is able to route local voice, video and data calls locally, and does not require a connection to a remote MSC. This routing efficiency increases the likelihood of network survival during natural disasters, reduces network overhead and lessens response times versus traditional cellular deployments.

In a recent example, Hurricane Sandy dealt a substantial blow to the US cellular infrastructure with the FCC reporting an outage of approximately 25% of cellular coverage. Having a network of LTE and UMTS base stations running ElementalCORE is more likely to remain operational during a devastating event like Hurricane Sandy as compared to networks reliant on centralized authentication and call routing.
