(AP Online Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) DC residents can start applying for gun permitsWASHINGTON (AP) _ Police in the District of Columbia are set to begin registering residents for handguns Thursday now that the district's 32-year-old ban has been lifted. Besides obtaining paperwork to buy new handguns, residents also can register firearms they've had illegally under a 180-day amnesty period.



VW's choice eases Chattanooga's past auto snubsCHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) _ When Volkswagen said yes, a city that shed its reputation for dirty air to become a top outdoors destination forgot years of frustrating rejections by automakers. Volkswagen's plans to build a $1 billion assembly plant and create 2,000 jobs in Chattanooga had radio listeners rejoicing on call-in shows, businesses hanging welcome signs and U.S. Sen. Bob Corker declaring the city "will never be the same again."

Police: Man kills woman, self in Missouri mallFLORISSANT, Mo. (AP) _ A man recently divorced from his wife of more than 20 years shot and killed her inside a suburban St. Louis mall on Wednesday before committing suicide, police said. No one else was injured but the Jamestown Mall in Florissant was evacuated. The shooter was 49 and his ex-wife was 47, but their names had not been released, St. Louis County police spokeswoman Tracy Panus said. Panus said they both lived in the nearby suburb of Hazelwood and had been married more than 20 years with grown children before recently divorcing.



Controlled burns set to battle California blazesSAN FRANCISCO (AP) _ Firefighters set more controlled burns Wednesday to block a wildfire that already has blackened 190 square miles and destroyed 27 homes on the central California coast. The controlled fires set Wednesday were proceeding well despite high humidity that had prevented firefighters from setting "back burns" on Tuesday.

Fox: Jackson used N-word in crude off-air remarksCHICAGO (AP) _ The Rev. Jesse Jackson used the N-word during a break in a TV interview where he criticized presidential candidate Barack Obama, Fox News confirmed Wednesday. The longtime civil rights leader already came under fire this month for crude off-air comments he made against Obama in what he thought was a private conversation during a taping of a "Fox & Friends" news show.

Brother of man suspected in 8 slayings is chargedCHICAGO (AP) _ The brother of a man suspected of killing eight people in Illinois and Missouri was charged Wednesday with concealing a homicidal death and obstructing justice. The grand jury in Whiteside County also indicted Joshua Sheley's girlfriend and another man in connection with Nicholas Sheley's alleged killing spree, authorities said.

Woman accused of poisoning son in Pa. hospitalPITTSBURGH (AP) _ A woman poisoned her infant son by repeatedly injecting salt water into his feeding tube at hospitals in Tennessee and Pittsburgh in what she claimed were attempts to hasten the death of a suffering child, authorities said Wednesday. Four-month-old Noah King is in critical condition with sodium poisoning at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, and police said they believe the baby's medical problems were caused entirely by his mother.

Police: N.M. suicide was similar to 'CSI' episodeALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) _ It looked like something out of "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation." And sure enough, it was. State police said Wednesday that they solved a mysterious eastern New Mexico shooting death that was similar to a shooting depicted in a 2003 "CSI" episode. In both cases a revolver was found tied to balloons in an apparent effort to make the weapon float away.

6th body pulled from Calif. canal after crashFRESNO, Calif. (AP) _ A sixth body was pulled from a rural, central California canal Wednesday after a collision between a septic truck and a sport utility vehicle carrying farm workers from a peach orchard. A seventh victim remained missing and is presumed dead. The latest victim was found in the swift, brackish waters of the canal about 10 miles from the wreck in Westley, sheriff's deputies said. The victim was identified as Adrianna Garcia, 17, from Lodi.

Police pose as pedestrians to nab errant driversCHICAGO (AP) _ So why did officer Grace Delgado try to cross the road? To remind motorists that they must stop whenever someone steps off the curb into a crosswalk. In an unusual undercover operation, Delgado posed as a pedestrian on a busy street while fellow officers waited for drivers to barrel past her in violation of a law that requires them yield at crosswalks, even if there is no stop sign.
