(AP Online Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) Carter: Hamas is willing to accept Israel as its neighborJERUSALEM (AP) _ Former President Jimmy Carter said Monday that Hamas _ the Islamic militant group that has called for the destruction of Israel _ is prepared to accept the right of the Jewish state to "live as a neighbor next door in peace." Carter relayed the message in a speech in Jerusalem after meeting last week with top Hamas leaders in Syria. It capped a nine-day visit to the Mideast aimed at breaking the deadlock between Israel and Hamas militants who rule the Gaza Strip.



Clinton, Obama cross Pennsylvania on eve of primaryJOHNSTOWN, Pa. (AP) _ It's the last full day of campaigning before the Pennsylvania primary, and once again, the two Democratic candidates will spend the day criss-crossing the state. Hillary Rodham Clinton, her husband and their daughter Chelsea have separate campaign stops planned before meeting up in Philadelphia for an evening event. Barack Obama finishes the day in Pittsburgh.

AP-Yahoo poll: Economy top worry, but barely affecting votesWASHINGTON (AP) _ The economy has soared past Iraq as the top problem on the minds of voters. But do the growing economic worries give a particular edge to any presidential candidate? Not so far, according to an Associated Press-Yahoo News poll released Monday. With growing layoffs, tight credit and an ailing housing market, 67 percent say the economy is an extremely important issue, up from 46 percent in November. Gasoline prices follow close behind at 59 percent.



In Selma, McCain praises civil rights marchersSELMA, Ala. (AP) _ Republican John McCain recalled the bloody beatings of civil rights marchers on the Edmund Pettus Bridge as he began a weeklong tour of communities he said are suffering from poverty and inattention from presidential candidates. McCain described in vivid detail the clubbing that fractured the skull of John Lewis, now a Democratic congressman. McCain, who speaks often of courage shown by military veterans, said he never saw greater courage than Lewis and the marchers showed that day, March 7, 1965.

Attacks in Middle East, Nigeria send oil to record $117.40Oil prices spiked to a record $117.40 a barrel after a Japanese oil tanker was hit by a rocket near Yemen and militants in Nigeria claimed two attacks on pipelines. The 150,000-ton tanker Takayama was attacked about 270 miles off the east coast Yemen coast in the Gulf of Aden while it was heading for Saudi Arabia, its Japanese operator, Nippon Yusen K.K., said in a statement.

DNA samples to be taken from polygamous sect kids this weekSAN ANGELO, Texas (AP) _ More than 400 children taken from a polygamous sect's ranch will undergo DNA testing this week, an attempt to determine who their parents are and if any sexual abuse took place. Officials plan to begin taking DNA samples Monday at the coliseum in San Angelo where the children are being housed, but may need three or four days to complete the job.

Bush seeks to cement legacy of ties with Canada, MexicoWASHINGTON (AP) _ President Bush, joining the conservative leaders of Canada and Mexico for one final time, is eager to expand a trading relationship that has been lucrative for the United States and both of its neighbors. But he is up against rising anti-trade sentiment. Bush joins Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Mexican President Felipe Calderon on Monday in New Orleans for his fourth and final North American Leaders' Summit. Despite its lofty name, the two-day meeting is more about technical cooperation than dramatic dealmaking.

Ex-bishop wins Paraguayan election; 6-decade rulers dumpedASUNCION, Paraguay (AP) _ The world's longest-ruling political party is about to lose its six-decade grasp on power in Paraguay after a former Roman Catholic bishop won the country's presidential election. The Colorado Party's reign _ which began in 1947 and was marked by the right-wing dictatorship of the late Gen. Alfredo Stroessner until his ouster in 1989 _ was halted by Fernando Lugo, a charismatic 56-year-old who advocated for the end of political corruption and economic disarray.
