Medvedev said on national television that the military had punished Georgia enough for its attack on South Ossetia. Georgia launched an offensive late Thursday to regain control over the separatist Georgian province, which has close ties to Russia.

Trade deficit number is expected to jumpWASHINGTON (AP) _ The Commerce Department releases its latest report today on the nation's trade deficit for June. While it had been narrowing, economists expect the trade deficit to jump in June because of the country's rising bill for foreign oil; crude didn't begin its pullback until mid-July. The deficit for June is expected to climb to $61.5 billion, according to the consensus forecast of Wall Street economists surveyed by Thomson/IFR. In May, the deficit shrank to $59.8 billion as a weaker dollar helped to boost U.S. exports to a new high.

District Court Judge Ronald Giles is to hold a hearing Tuesday after prosecutors said the mayor spent time over the weekend with his sister, a potential prosecution witness in his assault case. Doug Baker of the Michigan attorney general's office said in a court filing that the mayor had been ordered to have no contact with witnesses, yet he and his sister were together Saturday at their mother's house.

Bush wants some endangered species rules extinctWASHINGTON (AP) _ Just months before President Bush leaves office, his administration is antagonizing environmentalists by proposing changes that would allow federal agencies to decide for themselves whether subdivisions, dams, highways and other projects have the potential to harm endangered animals and plants. The proposal, first reported by The Associated Press, would cut out the advice of government scientists who have been weighing in on such decisions for 35 years. Agencies also could not consider a project's contribution to global warming in their analysis.

Half of overweight adults may be heart-healthyCHICAGO (AP) _ You can look great in a swimsuit and still be a heart attack waiting to happen. And you can also be overweight and otherwise healthy. A new study suggests that a surprising number of overweight people _ about half _ have normal blood pressure and cholesterol levels, while an equally startling number of trim people suffer from some of the ills associated with obesity. The first national estimate of its kind bolsters the argument that you can be hefty but still healthy, or at least healthier than has been believed.

Nature group says humpback whales recoveringGENEVA (AP) _ The humpback whale, nearly hunted into history four decades ago, is now on the "road to recovery" and is no longer considered at high risk of extinction, an environmental group said Tuesday. The International Union for Conservation of Nature _ the producer each year of a Red List of threatened species _ also upgraded the status of the southern "right" whale from vulnerable. The right whale gets its name from whalers who deemed it a particularly good species to hunt, because it floats after being killed.
