(AP Online Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Stocks fall sharply on surge in oil, jobs dataNEW YORK (AP) _ Wall Street plunged Friday on two troubling economic developments: oil prices that surged more than $10 a barrel to a fresh record and a jump in unemployment that was much larger than the market anticipated. The Dow Jones industrial average fell more than 360 points. The decline in stocks also helped drive bond prices sharply higher as investors sought a more secure place for their money.
Clinton, Obama talks held without aides presentWASHINGTON (AP) _ Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton sat in comfortable chairs, sipped water and spoke for an hour about the presidential campaign to come. Just the two of them, without aides. And they parted laughing. Aside from a fleeting backstage encounter in between their respective speeches to a pro-Israel group Wednesday, this was the first face-to-face meeting between Obama and Clinton since he clinched the Democratic presidential nomination and she moved to end her bid and endorse his candidacy.
Bush weighs new measures to help stimulate economyWASHINGTON (AP) _ President Bush is considering new measures to help stimulate the battered economy, the White House said Friday. White House counselor Ed Gillespie said aides to Bush are constantly looking at options for new economic proposals.
Vote on climate bill is blocked in SenateWASHINGTON (AP) _ Senate Republicans on Friday blocked a global warming bill that would have required major reductions in greenhouse gases, pushing debate over the world's biggest environmental concern to next year for a new Congress and president. Democratic leaders fell a dozen votes short of getting the 60 needed to end a Republican filibuster on the measure and bring the bill up for a vote, prompting Majority Leader Harry Reid to pull the legislation from consideration.
Former Air Force exec to be named as service chiefWASHINGTON (AP) _ Defense Secretary Robert Gates is likely to recommend to President Bush that he nominate a former Air Force executive, Michael B. Donley, to the service's top civilian post, a senior defense official said Friday. Donley, who was acting secretary of the Air Force for seven months in 1993 and served as the service's top financial officer from 1989 to 1993, would replace Michael Wynne, who was fired by Gates on Thursday along with the Air Force's top uniformed officer, Gen. Michael Moseley.
Pet projects still abound in CongressWASHINGTON (AP) _ So much for trimming the pork. The practice of decorating legislation with billions of dollars in pet projects and federal contracts is still thriving on Capitol Hill _ despite public outrage that helped flip control of Congress two years ago. More than 11,000 of those "earmarks," worth nearly $15 billion in all, were slipped into legislation telling the government where to spend taxpayers' money this year, keeping the issue at the center of Washington's culture of money, influence and politics. Now comes an election-year encore.
Eagle wounded by poacher gets new beak, new lookST. MARIES, Idaho (AP) _ More than three years after a poacher shot off her upper beak, a bald eagle named Beauty can finally live up to her name _ with the help of volunteers. A team attached an artificial beak to the 15-pound eagle in mid-May, improving her appearance and, more importantly, helping her grasp food. "She's got a grill," joked Nate Calvin, the Boise engineer who spent 200 hours designing the complex beak.
RIAA honors Jewel for 18 million in US album salesNASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) _ Jewel has been honored by the Recording Industry Association of America with a career milestone plaque commemorating sales of more than 18 million albums in the U.S. Jenny Alves, RIAA's coordinator of artist industry relations, surprised the 34-year-old singer Thursday as she prepared to sign autographs at the Country Music Association festival.
Newspapers run ads about fake airline Derrie-AirPHILADELPHIA (AP) _ Derrie-Air has been exposed. Readers of The Philadelphia Inquirer and Philadelphia Daily News opened their papers Friday to see ads for a new airline called Derrie-Air, which purportedly charges passengers by the pound. But the new carrier will never get off the ground. It's a one-day advertising campaign about a fake airline by Philadelphia Media Holdings, the papers' owner, and Gyro ad agency.
Bonds pleads not guilty to 15 federal chargesSAN FRANCISCO (AP) _ Barry Bonds renewed his claims of innocence Friday, pleading not guilty to 15 federal charges of lying to a grand jury about his performance-enhancing drug use. Baseball's home run king pleaded not guilty to similar accusations last December, but a judge ordered prosecutors to rewrite the indictment. The new indictment includes no new allegations.
