(AP Online Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Bush says rebates going out Monday should help economyWASHINGTON (AP) _ President Bush said tax rebates will start going out Monday, earlier than previously announced, and should help Americans cope with rising gasoline and food prices, as well as aid a slumping economy. Democrats said they were glad the rebate checks were about to go out, but suggested that multinational oil companies were not among the businesses the stimulus package was originally designed to help.



Obama presses on gas prices, Clinton hits on debatesINDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Barack Obama on Friday blamed high gasoline prices on Washington and a political establishment that he says hasn't stood up to oil companies, his two rivals for the presidency included. "The candidates with the Washington experience _ my opponents _ are good people. They mean well, but they've been in Washington for a long time and even with all that experience they talk about, nothing has happened," Obama said in remarks prepared for delivery later in the day. "This country didn't raise fuel efficiency standards for over 30 years."

US-contracted ship fires warning shots in GulfCAIRO, Egypt (AP) _ The U.S. Navy says a Defense Department contractor's ship fired flares and warning shots at two small boats approaching it in the Persian Gulf. Fifth Fleet spokeswoman Cmdr. Lydia Robertson says the Western Venture was in international waters in the central Persian Gulf when it was approached by two small boats of unknown origin.



3 NYPD detectives acquitted in 50-shot killingNEW YORK (AP) _ Three detectives were acquitted of all charges Friday in the 50-shot killing of an unarmed groom-to-be on his wedding day, a case that put the NYPD at the center of another dispute involving allegations of excessive firepower. Scores of police officers surrounded the courthouse to guard against potential chaos, and as news of the verdict spread, many began weeping. Others were enraged, swearing and screaming "Murderers! Murderers!" or "KKK!"

Prosecutor: Pregnant teller wounded in robbery loses twinsINDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ A prosecutor says a pregnant bank teller has lost the twins she was carrying when she was shot in an Indianapolis bank robbery. Katherin Shuffield, who was five months pregnant, was critically wounded in the robbery Tuesday morning at a Huntington Bank branch. Police have been searching for the gunman.

Zimbabwe police raid opposition, election officesHARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) _ Heavily armed police swooped down on opposition headquarters and independent election observers' offices on Friday, arresting hundreds and beating and shoving scores of people in the clearest signal to date that the government intends to hold on to power. Police seized material on vote counting from both offices in raids that came a day after the United States declared opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai had won the presidential elections. Zimbabweans are still awaiting official results. The opposition charges that President Robert Mugabe is using violence and coercion to hold on to power.

Sky News: Amy Winehouse is arrested on suspicion of assaultLONDON (AP) _ British singer Amy Winehouse was arrested on suspicion of assault Friday following reports that she scuffled with two men during a night out in a trendy north London neighborhood, Sky News television reported. The 24-year-old soul diva, whose stellar career has been complicated by an increasingly chaotic personal life, arrived at a central London police station earlier to answer questions relating to the alleged incident, her representatives said.

Yahoo plans makeover with elements of social networkSAN FRANCISCO (AP) _ Yahoo Inc. plans to make its Web site a social hub by hosting applications from other online services, part of the Internet pioneer's effort to spawn more advertising opportunities. "We are going to rewire the entire experience at Yahoo to make it social in every dimension," Ari Balogh, Yahoo's chief technology officer, said Thursday at a "Web 2.0" conference that drew a crowd of more than 1,000.

Penguin's wetsuit puts him back in the swim of thingsSAN FRANCISCO (AP) _ What's black and white and warm all over? A penguin in a wetsuit, naturally. Sounds like a joke, but it's quite serious for biologists at the California Academy of Sciences, who had a wetsuit created for an African penguin to help him get back in the swim of things. Pierre, a venerable 25 years old, was going bald, which left him with an embarrassingly exposed, pale pink behind.

Canadiens, Red Wings win 2nd round NHL series openersMONTREAL (AP) _ The Montreal Canadiens and Detroit Red Wings have opened their respective NHL conference semifinal series with 4-3 victories. The Canadiens went the comeback route while the Red Wings almost blew a three-goal lead. Tom Kostopoulos scored 48 seconds into overtime to give the Canadiens a 4-3 win over Philadelphia. Kostopoulos capped a pair of comebacks in which the Canadiens erased a 2-0 lead and later extended the game on Alex Kovalev's goal with just 28.6 seconds left in regulation. Kovalev also knotted the score 2-2 with a short-handed tally late in the second period.
