Kennedy was at Duke University Medical Center on Monday for a risky six-hour surgery for his cancerous brain tumor, and faces chemotherapy and radiation treatment following the procedure. The 76-year-old senator was diagnosed last month with a malignant glioma, a lethal type of brain tumor. A statement from the Massachusetts Democrat's office said the surgery would be performed by one of the nation's top neurosurgeons, Dr. Allan Friedman.
Judge orders return of polygamist group's childrenSAN ANGELO, Texas (AP) _ A judge on Monday ordered the return of more than 400 children taken from their parents at a polygamist group's ranch, following the state Supreme Court ruling that the state's seizure of the youngsters wasn't justified. The order signed by Texas District Judge Barbara Walther allowed parents to begin picking up their children from foster care at 10 a.m. CDT.
Clinton seeks to go after Obama superdelegatesRAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) _ As Barack Obama turns to concentrate on his general election challenge, his rival Hillary Rodham Clinton is mounting a last ditch campaign to stay relevant in what is left of the Democratic presidential contest. The former first lady enters this week with an insurgent strategy not only to win over undecided superdelegates but to peel away Obama's support from those party leaders and elected officials who already have committed to back him for the nomination.
Space shuttle closes in on space stationHOUSTON (AP) _ Shuttle Discovery closed in on the international space station Monday with a super-size delivery: a scientific lab that's as big as a school bus. Discovery was also ferrying up the space station's newest resident: astronaut Gregory Chamitoff.
Bomb explodes outside Danish embassy in PakistanISLAMABAD, Pakistan (AP) _ A huge car bomb exploded outside the Danish Embassy in the Pakistani capital on Monday, killing at least six people and wounding dozens more, officials and witnesses said. The blast echoed through Islamabad and left a crater more than three feet deep in the road in front of the main gate to the embassy. Glass, fallen masonry and dozens of wrecked vehicles littered the area. People, some bloodied, ran away in a state of panic.
Rock pioneer Bo Diddley dies at age 79JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) _ A spokeswoman says rock pioneer Bo Diddley has died. He was 79. The spokeswoman says Diddley died of heart failure Monday. He had suffered a heart attack in August 2007, three months after suffering a stroke while touring in Iowa.
Water pressure blamed for Universal Studios damageUNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. (AP) _ Authorities will try to determine Monday whether the blaze that destroyed some of Hollywood's most famous backdrops was made worse by low water pressure and an overwhelmed sprinkler system. At one point, Sunday's fire at Universal Studios was two city blocks wide, and low water pressure forced firefighters to get reserves from lakes and ponds on the 400-acre property. The blaze was contained to the studio's back lot, but it took firefighters more than 12 hours to extinguish it.
Wachovia board forces out CEO Ken ThompsonCHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) _ Wachovia Corp. chief executive Ken Thompson was pushed out Monday as head of the nation's fourth-largest bank, becoming the latest financial services executive to be ousted amid turmoil in the U.S. housing market. Thompson joins Stanley O'Neal at Merrill Lynch & Co. and Charles Prince at Citigroup Inc., who both presided over huge losses from exposure to bad mortgages, and were subsequently forced out from their perches at the top of Wall Street institutions.
Microsoft signs search distribution deal with HPSEATTLE (AP) _ In a bid to boost its Web search traffic, Microsoft Corp. on Monday announced a deal that will make its Live Search the default on Hewlett-Packard Co. personal computers shipped in the U.S. and Canada, starting in January. The deal also calls for HP, the world's largest PC maker, to install copies of Internet Explorer with an extra Live Search toolbar on those computers. Microsoft said the toolbar also links to HP services such as its Snapfish digital photo printing site.
Federer reaches quarterfinals at French OpenPARIS (AP) _ A drizzly afternoon made the balls heavy and traction tricky on Roger Federer's least-favorite surface. He hardly seemed bothered. Moving one round closer to that elusive French Open title, the top-ranked Federer beat Julien Benneteau of France 6-4, 7-5, 7-5 Monday to reach the quarterfinals. His next opponent will be No. 24-seeded Fernando Gonzalez, who ended American Robby Ginepri's surprising run at Roland Garros, 7-6 (4), 6-3, 6-1. Ginepri was the last American in either singles draw.
