(AP Online Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) E-Trade makes it easier to trade on the BlackBerryNEW YORK (AP) _ As if BlackBerry users needed one more excuse to be glued to their screens, E-Trade Financial Corp. is giving its account holders an application that will let them get real-time stock quotes and trade on their phones. High-end phone users have for a while been able to access E-Trade's Web site and those of most banks and brokerages, but the online firm is the first major U.S. brokerage to provide a mobile application with cash transfers and real-time quotes.
As Icahn grumbles, Yahoo sets plans for ad growthNEW YORK (AP) _ In the latest effort to placate restless investors, Yahoo Inc. president Sue Decker laid out plans Wednesday for building the company's online advertising operations, and Yahoo announced a slew of new partnerships. The push is aimed at proving either that the struggling Internet pioneer can go it alone or that Yahoo is worth more than the last offer from spurned suitor Microsoft Corp. The two companies are still in "ongoing, engaged" conversations about various kinds of partnerships, Decker said.
Study secretly tracks cell phone users outside USWASHINGTON (AP) _ Researchers secretly tracked the locations of 100,000 people outside the United States through their cell phone use and concluded that most people rarely stray more than a few miles from home. The first-of-its-kind study by Northeastern University raises privacy and ethical questions for its monitoring methods, which would be illegal in the United States.
Koreans hit Intel with $25 million antitrust fineSEOUL, South Korea (AP) _ South Korea's antitrust regulator said Thursday it will order Intel Corp. to pay $25.4 million for violating fair trade rules. The Korea Fair Trade Commission said in a statement Thursday that it was issuing the order because the semiconductor giant offered rebates to South Korean computer companies to undercut competitor Advanced Micro Devices Inc.
Google seals deal for new offices at NASA centerMOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (AP) _ In the latest sign of its ambitious growth plans, Google Inc. has signed a 40-year lease to secure space for a huge office complex that will be built on a federal government research center near the Internet search leader's Silicon Valley headquarters. The 1.2 million-square-foot campus announced Wednesday fulfills a vision that Google first laid out with the NASA Ames Research Center in 2005. The NASA center is within a 10-minute drive of Google's headquarters in Mountain View.

GE, Pittsburgh hospital establish imaging businessHARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ General Electric Co., the international conglomerate with a stake in everything from jet engines to network television, is investing $20 million in technology that will allow doctors to share and transmit images of microscopic human tissue. The partnership with a Pittsburgh hospital marks GE's entrance into a $2 billion market and could help expand its GE Healthcare division.
Report: Verizon Wireless in talks to buy AlltelNEW YORK (AP) _ Verizon Wireless is in talks to buy Alltel Communications LLC, the country's fifth-largest wireless carrier by subscribers, for $27 billion, according to news reports. If consummated, an acquisition would be the biggest telecom deal since AT&T Inc. bought BellSouth Corp. at the end of 2006. Adding Alltel's 13.2 million subscribers to Verizon Wireless' 67.2 million would create the largest wireless carrier in the country, far ahead of AT&T Inc. with 71.4 million customers.
Turkmenistan eases Internet accessASHGABAT, Turkmenistan (AP) _ Turkmenistan has begun allowing private citizens to connect to the Internet, the latest sign that the reclusive Central Asian nation is opening up. The country's only Internet provider, Turkmentelekom, said Thursday that it has been connecting up to 20 homes daily since the start of the week, mainly in the capital Ashgabat. It said it has a waiting list of 2,000 people.
Astronauts fix broken toilet, open up Japanese labCAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) _ To everybody's relief, astronauts fixed the toilet at the international space station on Wednesday and opened up a grand new science lab. The toilet problem had fast become the most pressing issue of the mission, so much so that a spare pump was rushed from Moscow to Cape Canaveral last week for a last-minute ride aboard space shuttle Discovery.
