(AP Online Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Yahoo 1Q profit rises, but Microsoft bid likely to stand patSAN FRANCISCO (AP) _ Yahoo Inc.'s first-quarter performance was a little like Goldilocks' favorite soup _ not too hot and not too cold, and that has set the table for a bitter battle over Microsoft Corp.'s bid to take over the Internet pioneer. By delivering earnings and revenue Tuesday that surpassed analysts' estimates, Yahoo added credence to its board's contention that the Sunnyvale-based company is poised for a dramatic turnaround that justifies a higher sales price than Microsoft's initial bid of $44.6 billion, or $31 per share.

Craigslist fires back, blasts eBay actions as unethicalSAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) _ Craigslist is firing back at its rival and minority owner eBay, scolding the online auctioneer's actions as unethical and smelling of a hostile takeover. In a move that pits two of the Internet's most popular sites against each other, EBay Inc. sued the online classifieds company Tuesday, alleging it unfairly tried to dilute eBay's stake in it.

Robotic vigilante: Homemade 'Bum Bot' patrols in AtlantaATLANTA (AP) _ Cars passing O'Terrill's pub screech to a halt at the sight of a 300-pound, waist-high robot marked "SECURITY" rolling through downtown long after dark. The regulars hardly glance outside. They've seen bar owner Rufus Terrill's invention on patrol before _ its bright red lights and even brighter spotlight blazing, infrared video camera filming and water cannon at the ready in the spinning turret on top.

SEC charges Broadcom with stock option backdatingSANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) _ Federal officials charged semiconductor-maker Broadcom Corp. on Tuesday with falsifying its reported income by illegally backdating stock options for five years. Google accused of deception in selling AdSense keyword adsNEW YORK (AP) _ An advertiser sued Google Inc. in federal court Tuesday claiming the company deceived him and charged for ads displayed on third-party Web sites, even though he left blank an "optional" box that seemed to address the issue. The dispute is over Google's popular AdSense program, which targets ads to keywords in articles and other content at participating sites. The program complements the traditional AdWords program, which runs targeted ads alongside Google's search results. Ads under both programs generate the bulk of Google's revenues.

It's no LOL: Few US doctors answer e-mails from patientsLOS ANGELES (AP) _ Suzanne Kreuziger is a registered nurse who uses e-mail almost exclusively to communicate with friends. But when it comes to reaching her doctor, there's a frustrating firewall. The barrier is her doctor's own reluctance to talk to patients through e-mail.

Court overturns government's ruling against RambusSAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) _ Rambus Inc. has scored another legal victory in its long-running battle to collect millions of dollars in royalties on its patented designs for computer memory chips. A federal appeals court ruled Tuesday that the Federal Trade Commission didn't offer enough evidence in accusing the company of engaging in monopolistic behavior. Shares of the Los Altos-based company jumped on the news, gaining 65 cents, or 3 percent, to end at $23.19.

Senators debate future of WebWASHINGTON (AP) _ Federal Communications Commission Chairman Kevin Martin said Tuesday his agency has all the authority it needs to prevent Internet service providers from discriminating against Web surfers and that new legislation is unnecessary. "I do not believe any additional regulations are needed at this time," Martin said at a hearing before the Senate Commerce Committee. "But I also believe that the commission has a responsibility to enforce the principles that it has already adopted."

Low-cost laptop program sees a key leadership defectionBOSTON (AP) _ A key person behind the "$100 laptop" for schoolchildren has left the project as the organization overhauls its operations and prepares to tweak its open-source approach by welcoming Microsoft Corp.'s Windows. While the One Laptop Per Child Foundation is known as the brainchild of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Nicholas Negroponte, his longtime MIT colleague Walter Bender was a close No. 2. Bender oversaw software and content for the green-and-white "XO" laptops, whose user interface was specially designed as an educational tool.

AT&T 1Q profit up 22 percent on strong wireless growthNEW YORK (AP) _ Showing few signs of being affected by a slowing economy, AT&T Inc.'s first-quarter earnings rose 22 percent on strong growth in wireless. The wireless division at country's largest telecommunications company continued to drive growth, even as the local-phone business is stuck with declining numbers. The enterprise division, which provides services to the government and large corporations, reversed a slide.
