(Associated Press Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Game companies ready to show new ways to playNEW YORK (AP) _ Video game makers are about to try to convince you that fancy 3-D screens, gesture-recognition cameras and ultra-sensitive motion controllers topped with brightly glowing spheres are what you need to have a good time. They'll do this as they try to emerge from a slump in the recession, which shocked a business long believed to be protected from, if not totally immune to, the workings of the broader economy.



PTA joins with Facebook to promote Internet safetyNEW YORK (AP) _ The PTA and Facebook are joining forces to promote Internet safety through a set of tools and resources for kids, schools and parents. The world's largest online social network and the National PTA will work together to build a program to provide information and support about such issues as cyberbullying, good online citizenship and Internet security.

AT&T hole exposes iPad users' e-mail addressesSAN FRANCISCO (AP) _ AT&T Inc. on Wednesday acknowledged a security weak spot that exposed the e-mail addresses of apparently more than 100,000 users of Apple Inc.'s iPad, a breach that could make those people vulnerable to precision-targeted hacking attacks. The vulnerability only affected iPad users who signed up for AT&T's "3G" wireless Internet service.


NYC mayor shrugs off iPad e-mail address leakNEW YORK (AP) _ Mayor Michael Bloomberg's e-mail address was exposed because of a security vulnerability with his new iPad, but the billionaire media mogul shrugged it off Thursday and said he didn't understand the fuss. "It shouldn't be pretty hard to figure out my e-mail address," Bloomberg said, "and if you send me an e-mail and I don't want to read it, I don't open it. To me it wasn't that big of a deal." Google spruces up home page with background imagesMOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (AP) _ If Google's famously sparse home page is too plain for you, the company is giving you some more options. A bold color photo of sand dunes replaced the white background to Google's search box Thursday. You can replace the desert scene with an image of your own or others available from Google. Or you can stick with the classic format.

Swiss solar cell inventor wins technology prizeHELSINKI (AP) _ Swiss scientist Michael Graetzel won the 2010 Millennium Technology Prize on Wednesday for helping to develop cheap solar cells for renewable energy projects. The German-born chemist, director of the photonics and interfaces laboratory at Ecole Polytechnique de Lausanne in the Swiss city of the same name _ was awarded the (EURO)800,000 ($960,000) prize by the Technology Academy of Finland for his innovation, which led to the development of electricity-generating windows and mobile solar panels.

Twitter to use own Web link shrinker this summerSAN FRANCISCO (AP) _ Twitter plans to start using its own Web link shortener on addresses that users include in tweets. Starting this summer, Twitter will use its new "t.co" domain name to shorten links that users post directly on Twitter.com or through applications such as TweetDeck. That will help the posts stay within the service's 140-character limit. The company is currently testing its linking technology with some employee accounts.

World Cup coverage expands on the Web, cell phonesNEW YORK (AP) _ With games airing live on cell phones and computers, the World Cup will get more online coverage than any major sporting event yet. Watching highlights the next day on TV or YouTube will suddenly seem a downright ancient way to keep up with the action. When the soccer tournament begins Friday, footy fans can follow the action from an array of mobile and Web applications and share in triumph and heartbreak across social media.

'Back to Future,' 'Jurassic Park' to become gamesLOS ANGELES (AP) _ Telltale Games is going back in time for a new series of video games. The developer is creating episodic titles based on the "Back to the Future" and "Jurassic Park" franchises. The popular Universal Studios film trilogies spawned several games in their heyday in the '80s and '90s but have been absent from the interactive realm. The as-yet-untitled Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, PC and Mac games are set to be released this winter.

China says it will keep blocking online contentBEIJING (AP) _ China vowed Tuesday to keep a tight grip on the Internet, saying it would continue to block anything considered subversive or threatening to "national unity." The "white paper" statement of government policy was released three months after a public dispute over censorship prompted Google Inc. to shut its mainland-based search engine.
