(Associated Press Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Court OKs TV rules opposed by Comcast, CablevisionWASHINGTON (AP) _ A federal court Friday upheld regulations that require cable TV companies to make sports programming and other channels they own available on equal terms to rival TV providers such as satellite companies. The ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia leaves in place the Federal Communications Commission "program access" rules, which are intended to ensure that cable companies cannot withhold highly desirable programming that they own from competitors.
No .xxx yet: Internet agency delays porn decisionNAIROBI, Kenya (AP) _ Porn Web sites can't park themselves at a ".xxx" address quite yet. A global Internet oversight agency on Friday deferred a decision until June on whether to create a ".xxx" Internet suffix as an online red-light district.
Chinese minister insists Google obey the lawBEIJING (AP) _ China's top Internet regulator insisted Friday that Google must obey its laws or "pay the consequences," giving no sign of a possible compromise in their dispute over censorship and hacking. "If you want to do something that disobeys Chinese law and regulations, you are unfriendly, you are irresponsible and you will have to pay the consequences," Li Yizhong, the minister of Industry and Information Technology, said on the sidelines of China's annual legislature.
Lenovo says business will focus on mobile InternetBEIJING (AP) _ Lenovo Group expects wireless Internet products to account for up to 80 percent of its sales within five years as it pursues expansion in faster-growing emerging markets, CEO Yang Yuanqing said Friday. Lenovo, the world's fourth-largest personal computer maker, jumped into the mobile Internet market in January with the unveiling of a smart phone and two Web-linked portable computers.
Apple takes pre-orders for April 3 iPad launchCUPERTINO, Calif. (AP) _ Apple is accepting pre-orders for the iPad, its new touch-screen gadget for reading books, watching video and surfing the Web. IPads with Wi-Fi wireless connections will go on sale on April 3 for $499 and up. Apple Inc. says people can pre-order online and get it on April 3 where Saturday delivery is available.
'Uncharted 2' nabs 5 trophies at video game awardsSAN FRANCISCO (AP) _ "Uncharted 2: Among Thieves" stole the show at the Game Developers Choice Awards. The high-octane PlayStation 3 action-adventure game developed by Naughty Dog won five trophies at the Game Developers Conference ceremony Thursday, including game of the year. "Uncharted 2," which casts players in the role of globe-trotting treasure hunter Nathan Drake, was also honored Thursday evening for best writing, audio, technology and visual art.
Report finds online censorship more sophisticatedNEW YORK (AP) _ Repressive regimes have stepped up efforts to censor the Internet and jail dissidents, Reporters Without Borders said in a study out Thursday. China, Iran and Tunisia, which are on the group's "Enemies of the Internet" list, got more sophisticated at censorship and overcoming dissidents' attempts to communicate online, said Reporters Without Borders' Washington director, Clothilde Le Coz.
Feds pledge tough review of Comcast-NBC dealWASHINGTON (AP) _ Federal regulators are pledging rigorous reviews of Comcast Corp.'s proposed purchase of NBC Universal to ensure that it would not stifle competition or harm consumers. Christine Varney, the Justice Department's antitrust chief, and Julius Genachowski, chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, offered no indication at a hearing Thursday of what the outcome of those reviews could be.
VeriSign to spend more than $300M on tech upgradesSAN FRANCISCO (AP) _ VeriSign Inc., whose technology is key to allowing Internet users to access Web sites with names ending in ".com" and ".net," plans to spend more than $300 million over the next decade to upgrade its systems. The upgrades will allow VeriSign's machines to handle up to 4 quadrillion requests per day from computers trying to reach those sites. That's a thousand times more lookups than the 4 trillion per day that the company can currently handle.
February video game sales drop 15 percentSEATTLE (AP) _ U.S. retail sales of video games declined 15 percent in February, hurt in part by an ongoing decline in sales of music games and lower sales of the Wii system. Americans spent $1.26 billion on video game systems, software and accessories during the month, down from $1.48 billion a year ago, market researcher NPD Group said Thursday.
