(AP Online Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Analysts: US consumers buying fewer cell phonesNEW YORK (AP) _ U.S. consumers have been buying significantly fewer cell phones but paying higher prices for them, according to a research firm. The NPD Group said in a report Tuesday that 28 million cell phones were sold in the United States in the second quarter, a decline of 13 percent from the same period a year ago.



Japan reports 2 iPods overheating, suspects defectTOKYO (AP) _ Japan is investigating a possible battery defect in the popular iPod Nano music player after reports that two overheated in Tokyo, scorching nearby paper and a woven straw mat, a government official said Tuesday. No one was injured, and there was no further damage, said Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry official Hiroyuki Yoshitsune.

Electronic Arts won't extend Take-Two deadlineNEW YORK (AP) _ Video game publisher Electronic Arts Inc. is retracting its hostile bid for smaller rival Take-Two Interactive Software Inc., but a deal _ and a friendly one at that _ is likelier than ever. Take-Two, best known for the popular "Grand Theft Auto" video game series, confirmed Monday it expects to sign a confidentiality agreement with EA to begin formal discussions about "strategic alternatives."



Forget HD DVD: Toshiba focuses on plain old DVDNEW YORK (AP) _ After losing out in the battle to define the high-definition successor of the DVD, Toshiba Corp. has turned its attention to the next best thing: the DVD. On Monday, the Japanese electronics company is releasing a new DVD player that it says does more than previous models to improve the look of DVDs on high-definition TVs.

Qwest, unions agree on new contractsDENVER (AP) _ Qwest Communications International Inc. and negotiators for its largest union said Monday they tentatively agreed on a contract, avoiding a strike that could have disrupted both upcoming political conventions. About a day after a previous contract expired, Denver-based Qwest came to terms on a three-year deal with the Communications Workers of America, which represents about 20,000 of its employees in 13 states.

TV remains top source of news even as online growsNEW YORK (AP) _ Fewer Americans are reading newspapers and are instead getting their news online, but television remains the leading source of news in the country, according to a survey released Sunday. Not surprisingly, younger people tend to get more of their news on the Internet, while older folks use traditional media such as television and newspapers, the Pew Research Center's biannual survey on news consumption habits said.

Analog TV shutdown kills free cell-phone TVNEW YORK (AP) _ Picture whipping out your cell phone and catching up with "Lost" or "Jeopardy," or watching the local 11 o'clock news, all for free. You can do this with an imported Chinese phone, but you can't with any phone sold in the U.S. _ at least not without monthly charges.

Netflix resumes normal shipping after 3-day glitchSAN FRANCISCO (AP) _ Online DVD rental leader Netflix Inc. resumed normal shipments Friday after its distribution centers were crippled by three days of severe technical problems, a spokesman said. The Los Gatos-based company also offered a 15 percent credit to customers whose discs were delayed by the outage, the longest disruption in service since Netflix launched its subscription service nine years ago.
