Asia underground market awaits iPhoneHONG KONG (AP) _ As Apple Inc. rolled out its newest iPhone on Friday, dealers and buyers were anticipating the popular device in Asia's thriving underground marketplace in as little as a few days. The iPhones are nothing new to Asia, where enthusiasts from Bangkok to Shanghai already sport fake and unlocked versions of last year's models _ unlocked so they can work with any carrier, not just the Apple-authorized ones.
Apple Web service falters on eve of iPhone launchSEATTLE (AP) _ Apple Inc.'s new data synching service got off to a rocky start Thursday, as some users were denied access to their accounts just hours before the next-generation iPhone is slated to go on sale. MobileMe, as the $99-per-year service is called, will let people view, update and sync e-mails, calendar appointments and contacts across iPhones, Macs and Windows PCs. Like its predecessor, Apple's .Mac, MobileMe also lets users store and share files over the Internet.
FCC chief says Comcast violated Internet rulesWASHINGTON (AP) _ The head of the Federal Communications Commission said Thursday he will recommend that the nation's largest cable company be punished for violating agency principles that guarantee customers open access to the Internet. The potentially precedent-setting move stems from a complaint against Comcast Corp. that the company had blocked Internet traffic among users of a certain type of "file sharing" software that allows them to exchange large amounts of data.
Schmidt: Independent Yahoo better for competitionSUN VALLEY, Idaho (AP) _ Google Inc. backs Yahoo in its effort to stave off an unsolicited takeover by Microsoft Corp. because an independent Yahoo will increase competition in the Internet search and advertising markets, Google Chief Executive Eric Schmidt said here Thursday. "We absolutely support the decision that Yahoo made" in rejecting the Microsoft overture, Schmidt said at the annual Allen & Co. media summit at this Idaho resort. He made the comments during an hourlong interview with reporters. Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin were also present.

(AP) _ Two more Internet access providers have agreed to eliminate certain newsgroups that contain child pornography and purge their servers of child pornography Web sites in an agreement with state Attorney General Andrew Cuomo. Thursday's announcement covers AT&T Inc., the nation's largest access provider, and Time Warner Inc.'s AOL, the third largest. They follow similar agreements last month with Verizon Communications Inc., Sprint Nextel Corp. and Time Warner Cable Inc.
Verizon open network gets first, unsexy deviceNEW YORK (AP) _ When Verizon Wireless announced in November that it would open up its network to any company that wanted to make a device for it, industry watchers had visions of innovative features like cheap international calls and Google applications. But the very first device to take advantage of the open network is decidedly less sexy, and it appears to be setting the tone for the first generation of gadgets on the network.
