Amsterdam and Tokyo toast "twin stations" with tulips

(Mainichi Daily News Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)East Japan Railway Co. (JR East) has announced that Tokyo Station will form ties with Holland's Amsterdam Central Station in a "sister-station" relationship.

Superficially, Tokyo and Amsterdam Central stations do bear a resemblance to each other: both have a red brick facade, and feature distinctive low, wide station buildings.

A secretary of the Dutch Embassy in Japan said they look like twins, and asked JR East to conclude sister-station ties.

The ceremony to seal the ties is slated for April, but Amsterdam Central Station has already sent 1,000 tulip roots to Tokyo Station. The tulip roots will be planted outside Tokyo Station's main entrance in May. (Mainichi) [Mainichi Daily News / March 25]
