Amazon to Launch Kindle E-Book Service in Japan [Jiji Press English News Service]
(Jiji Press English News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Tokyo, April 14 (Jiji Press)--U.S. online retail giant Amazon.com Inc. will introduce its e-book service using the Kindle readers in the Japanese market by the end of this year, it was learned.
Amazon.com is negotiating with multiple publishers in Japan since last year, informed sources said.
The U.S. firm aims to explore Japan's e-book market by using its strong customer base established through its online shopping service.
So far, few details have been disclosed over Amazon.com's Japanese e-book business, such as the number of titles.
In Japan, Sony Corp. and some other firms sell e-book readers priced between 20,000 yen and 30,000 yen. Amazon.com is likely to offer lower prices, the sources said.
E-book businesses are taking off in Japan, involving traditional publishers, book store operators, printing firms and others. The Japanese market is expected to triple from the current size to 200 billion yen in 2015.
On April 2, major publishers such as Kodansha Ltd. and Innovation Network Corp. of Japan, a private-public investment fund, set up a new e-book company Digital Publishing Initiatives Japan Co.END
