Allstream Joins Arbor Networks' Cloud SignalingSM Coalition to Stop DDoS Attacks

BURLINGTON, MA, Dec 11, 2012 (PRWeb.com via COMTEX) -- Arbor Networks, Inc., a leading provider of network security and management solutions for enterprise and service provider networks, announced today that Canadian business communications provider Allstream has joined Arbor's Cloud SignalingSM Coalition (CSC). Preventing distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks and mitigating the threats they pose requires collaboration among all stakeholders. The CSC is an innovative partnership between service providers, data center operators and enterprises with the mission to ensure the availability of their network infrastructure and speed time-to-mitigation for DDoS attacks.

Joining the CSC will enable Allstream to expand its services and offer customers more proactive ways to block harmful traffic without impeding legitimate traffic. Allstream's managed IP solutions and services help customers simplify IT operations to improve productivity, maximize network performance and manage costs. With these tools and services, IT professionals can address the increasingly complex challenges of massive data and storage demands, cybercrime, business continuity, mobile workers and cloud computing.

"We are dedicated to helping IT professionals evolve with rapidly changing technological demands while maintaining network performance at maximum levels," said Jim DeMerlis, Vice President of Marketing at Allstream. "As DDoS attacks become more complex, enhanced network security becomes imperative. Our involvement in Arbor's Cloud Signaling Coalition is just another example of how Allstream is committed to our customers' network security." Allstream has just released an educational video series titled: DDoS Attacks - Understanding the business impacts and methods for mitigating the risks. These videos explore the phenomenon of Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks - what they are, how they are evolving and who is behind them.

"Mitigating DDoS threats should be part of any company's risk planning and business continuity strategy," said Arbor Networks President Colin Doherty. "Allstream recognizes that being a part of the Coalition is the best way to keep their customers' networks secure. Allstream is clearly taking a proactive approach to reducing the risk inherent in cyberattacks, which will allow its customers' businesses to operate more productively and securely." World Leader in DDoS Mitigation Arbor Networks' 450 customers include the vast majority of the world's service providers and many of the largest enterprise networks in use today. According to a report from Infonetics Research titled, DDoS Prevention Appliance Market Outlook, Arbor Networks was cited as the top supplier of DDoS prevention solutions overall as well as in the carrier, enterprise and mobile market segments.

Arbor's products are empowered with its ATLAS(R) Intelligence Feed which looks for new threats and automatically delivers threat updates to customers. This insight is critical to security because botnets are constantly changing to thwart detection. Arbor's ATLAS infrastructure combines a darknet sensor network with traffic data from more than 200 service provider customers around the world. The dataset enables Arbor to have a unique, globally-scoped view of malicious traffic traversing the Internet.

Cloud Signaling Technology in Action When an enterprise or data center operator discovers that he is under a service-disrupting DDoS attack, he can choose to mitigate the attack in the cloud through the Cloud Signaling system, simply by clicking on a drop down menu and triggering an alert to the service provider. This proactive approach enables him to stay in control and in command of the event. A volumetric DDoS attack congesting the upstream links would immediately diminish or disappear altogether from the data center's access links, and service availability would be protected. Participation in the Cloud Signaling Coalition allows the service provider to provide differentiated managed security services, reduces the time to mitigation and increases the effectiveness of the response against DDoS threats, thus saving the customer from major operational expenses and helping to preserve its reputation. Enterprise and managed services customers also benefit from real-time monitoring of the attack mitigation, as well as granular post-mortem reports with details of the attack and the steps taken by the service provider to mitigate the attack, helping to establish best practices.

Cloud Signaling Functionality: A Faster, Automated Way to Prevent DDoS Attacks At the heart of Cloud Signaling functionality are Arbor Networks' Peakflow(R) SP and Pravail(R) Availability Protection System (APS) solutions. Peakflow SP powers many of the world's leading cloud-based DDoS managed security services, while Pravail APS is an on-premise device that protects the enterprise perimeter against threats to availability -- specifically, protection against application-layer DDoS attacks.

Cloud Signaling functionality is an efficient and integrated way of bridging the enterprise data center to the service provider cloud. Cloud Signaling functionality connects the on-premise Pravail APS device with the cloud-based Peakflow SP solution. Arbor believes that the best way for enterprises and data center and cloud operators to have optimal protection against DDoS attacks is through this combination of on-premise and in-cloud protection.
