Alfresco Software: Open Source Adoption Gains Momentum in UK as Crunch
Takes Hold; Alfresco sees strong customer momentum; Posts record
quarter as UK rises to second place
(M2 PressWIRE Via Acquire Media NewsEdge)
RDATE:13102008
London, UK. -- Alfresco Software today announced that despite the
global economic downturn, it has witnessed record levels of customer
adoption in the UK as businesses rethink their proprietary software
strategies, turning to more cost effective and scalable open source
alternatives.
In a reversal of trends seen during the second half of 2007, UK
companies and government agencies are seeking greater value for money
when it comes to renewing their software licenses, or embarking on new
projects. In addition, the UK, previously viewed as cautious over open
source adoption in comparison to its European counterparts, showed the
second strongest growth market after the US.
Across UK industries, new customers such as Arcadia Petroleum, Betfair,
Bristol City Council, Hertsmere Council, Imprima, National Rail, The
Open Group and Screen Digest are in the process of rolling out Alfresco
open source solutions for both Enterprise and Web Content Management.
These customers are just some of the organizations that have recognised
that in an economic downturn, value and control of your costs are what
is critical. Open source is delivering a massive reduction in license
fees whilst allowing a customer to control cost today and in the future
through choice and support of standards without the traditional tie-in
of proprietary software. This is coupled with a subscription that
provides traditional enterprise-class support.
"The world is undergoing serious economic turbulence, but at a time
when businesses know they cannot simply terminate IT projects, open
source software provides the perfect solution," explained John Powell,
CEO, Alfresco Software. "By resisting the demands of monopolist
proprietary vendors, organisations in both the UK's public and private
sector s are reaping the benefits of creating flexible and scalable
infrastructures whilst lowering their overall IT spend. Open source
powers the internet today and that low cost scalability is coming to UK
enterprises. Today the agenda is reducing cost and improving
productivity with the resources you have. Alfresco has just recorded
its most successful ever quarter and we're looking forward to
continuing that success through 2009."
Alfresco recently launched the third generation of its open source Labs
product, featuring four key components:
* Alfresco Share, a next generation social computing collaboration
application
* Draft CMIS implementation, a content management standard that allows
applications to work with the leading Enterprise Content Management
systems
* Support for the Microsoft Office SharePoint protocol, providing users
with the first open source fully-compatible SharePoint repository
* Alfresco Surf, a platform to enable development of dynamic,
REST-oriented web applications and collaborative web sites
