Alcatel-Lucent solution selected by Chunghwa Telecom for
fibre-to-the-building network expansion
(Corporate IT Update Via Acquire Media NewsEdge)
Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris: ALU) (NYSE: ALU) announced on 9 October
that they have signed a contract with Chunghwa Telecom (CHT), the
largest telecomms service provider in Taiwan, to provide Ethernet/MPLS
solutions for its fibre-to-the-building (FTTB) expansion.
This network expansion project will enable CHT to provide very high
speed services to a larger residential and business subscriber base
across Taiwan. The new contract is part of CHT's 'Optical Era Project',
which involves an investment of approximately USD1.8bn to construct an
island-wide fibre optical network over a five-year period. The final
goal of the project is to bring fibre optic connections to 2.4m
subscribers by 2010.
Alcatel-Lucent will supply CHT with its 7450 Ethernet Service Switch
(ESS), a scalable Ethernet/MPLS aggregation solution that enables
carriers to provide high-bandwidth, high-speed Internet (HSI), video
and voice services. The expansion will equip CHT with higher network
capacity and offer FTTB subscribers fast data transfer at the download
speeds of 10Mb/s, 50Mb/s and 100Mb/s for services including high speed
Internet, IPTV and virtual private networks.
No financial details of the contract were disclosed.
