Airtel Pumps K50 Million in Esther Fight
(AllAfrica Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) AIRTEL Zambia has become the official sponsor of the impending Women International Boxing Association (WIBA) and Women International Boxing Organisation (WIBO) unification title fight between Esther Phiri and Monalisa Sibanda of Zimbabwe on February 17.
The mobile service provider donated K50 million towards the fight, a boost that has left the organisers, Exodus International Boxing Stables (EIBS) with a deficit of only 25 per cent, which translates into about K157 million.
The promoters had an initial budget of K630 million for the fight which has been set for next Friday at the Mulungushi International Conference Centre in Lusaka after being deferred three times already.
Airtel Zonal Business Manager, James Chona said during a Press briefing at the Pamodzi Hotel in Lusaka yesterday that his company was delighted to once again be a part of Zambia's best female Zambian champion.
Chona expressed hope that Esther would go a long way in her career and make the country proud by beating Sibanda and return her titles.
EIBS board member Peter Cottan said the Esther-Monalisa fight was on, contrary to speculation that the fight would not take place saying all was set for the bout and that nothing would prevent it from taking place.
Cottan said the Exodus promotions had managed to raise the K473 million which was about 75 per cent of the budget adding that the stable was still scouting for the shortfall and expressed hope the target would be met before the fight.
Cottan, who expressed gratitude to the corporate world for the overwhelming support said, the tickets for the fight would be printed in South Africa to prevent counterfeit tickets adding that the fare has been pegged at K75, 000. Tickets will be sold at Airtel outlets in Lusaka.
