AICC Wants Young People Take Agriculture As Business to Drive the Economy


(AllAfrica Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) : The African Institute of Corporate Citizen (AICC) Finance and Administration Manager, Henry Chiwalo says young people are the driving force to improving the economy by considering and involving their innovative and creative agro-based ideas.



Speaking with Malawi News Agency (Mana) on Tuesday Chiwalo explained that the African Institute of Corporate Citizenship (AICC) will on 27th September this year hold a Young Innovative Farmers Market Fair to showcase the potential and creativity that the young people have through agro processed products.

He noted that agriculture contributes one third of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the country, hence that requires to realize involving young people in the agriculture sector to improve on production levels and to increase export base.


Chiwalo reiterated that AICC would want to change the mind-set of taking agriculture as old fashioned profession which they cannot involve themselves, thinking they cannot make profits out of it as expected.

"We would want to involve and attract the youth to go into agriculture to boost the economy since Malawi is dominated by young people from age range of 18 to 40 years. If nurtured and enhanced the youths can be instrumental to the economic transformation of this country," Chiwalo said.

In the view that many young people are facing more challenges to engaging into agriculture African Institute of Corporate Citizenship through its strategic objectives wants to attract the youths to proactively venture into agricultural sector by building capacity.

"AICC has the mandate to promote Corporate Citizenship principles through capacity building and strengthening of civil society, rural communities and building a case for corporate social responsibility and establishing mutually beneficial partnerships between businesses, civil society and government by facilitating multi-stakeholder dialogue processes," Chiwalo explained.

He added that through young innovative farmer initiatives the AICC aims to enhancing productivity among young innovative farmers in and creates a platform for decision making and modeling and unleashing the agribusiness and marketing skills among young innovative farmers.

Furthermore he said that AICC would implement the initiatives made by Government. However, he said that African Institute of Corporate Citizenship realizes the challenges that many young people are experiencing and their tendencies to insinuate agribusinesses.

"We realize that there are high poverty levels among the youths and lack of access to land and farm capital," said Chiwalo.
