Agencia EFE offers new application to fight piracy

Madrid, Nov 8, 2009 (EFE via COMTEX) -- Agencia EFE, Spain's international news agency, has reached an agreement with U.S.-based information technology provider Attributor to distribute an application in Ibero-America and U.S. Hispanic markets that will allow clients to monitor the content they produce and fight piracy on the Internet.

The application developed by Attributor allows content producers - media outlets, businesses and institutions - to automatically control the use in real time of their information and verify whether correct attribution has been provided.

Clients using the application will be able to take measures to control how and where information is used, generating new businesss opportunities.

EFE's alliance with Attributor offers a new value-added service and, moreover, places the news agency at the forefront of efforts to defend authors' rights, a critical issue for media outlets due to the fact that the Internet has made it possible for content to be reused without permission or compensation for producers.

The application developed by Attributor has shown that information reaches 5.3 times the estimated audience on Web sites, with content being used by non-clients and without permission.

This extended audience represents millions of dollars in lost revenue for content providers.

Agencia EFE has been using the Attributor application since September to monitor and identify use of its content on the Web.

With EFE's alliance with Attributor, which is based in Silicon Valley, the world's four largest news agencies now work with the company to fight unauthorized content reuse. EFE jt/hv
