Freetown, Jan 08, 2009 (Concord Times/All Africa Global Media via COMTEX) --
Africell Lintel Sierra Leone limited has been awarded by the All Works of Life (AWOL) as the best telecommunications company in the country for 2008.
The award was officially presented to the company by AWOL's chairman, Kweku Lisk at a press conference held at Mamba Point Guest House in Freetown.
According to a member of the national achievement awards committee, Dr. Osman Gbla, Africell was the most popular network amongst local farmers in the provinces thereby enhancing exchange of ideas among them.
He said in the area of sports, Africell was the sole sponsor of the nation's premier football league, adding that they also sponsor the national team, Leone Stars in the 2010 world cup and African cup of nations qualifying series.
"Another delivery by Africell last year was the company's $US 300,000 funding of the beautification of the cotton tree. By the close of 2008, Africell gave its subscribers a 'Christmas bonanza'-offering 2,009 cell phones, 30 motorbikes and other valuables," he said.
Africell's chief commercial officer, Joe Amara Bangali Jnr. said it was truly an honour to receive such an award which illustrates that the company was indeed the number one GSM operator in the country.
He said they view the award not only as an honour but a great challenge as well, stressing the need for the company to maintain the very high standards they have set.
"The category of award, telecommunications company of the year, is extremely important. Mobile phone is the most widely used technology on the planet," he said.
Bangali said researchers have discovered that an increase of ten percent in the number of mobile phone users in a country can increase annual economic growth rate by up to 1.2 percent.
"In Sierra Leone, Africell is at the forefront of the GSM/wireless industry, providing quality of service and contributing to socio-economic development of the country," he said.
He said the award would enable the company to confidently face the challenges of 2009, as they hope to build on their successes of 2008.
